Trains derail or capsize very often in the one hundred li wind region on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway Line. The relationship between the highest safe running speeds of trains and the ambient wind speed is studied on the basis of the dynamic torque balance principle and the factors affecting train operations are also analyzed. It is of great importance to accident prevention and safe running of trains in the monsoon region. Computational results show that the critical wind speed of the unloaded car is lower than that of the loaded car, the critical wind speed of the freight car is lower than that of the passenger car, and the critical wind speed of the unloaded box car is the lowest.
