Objective To investigate changes of valsartan on insulin resistance and left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with essential hypertension. Methods The concentrations of fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and c peptide（c-p） were measured in 56 hypertensive patients and 56 control healthy subjects. Valsartan was used to treat hypertension for 21 weeks, Recheck the above Laboratory tests after treatment. The insulin sensitivity index（ISI） of each group was calculated and compared. Echocardiography was examined before and after 21 weeks of treatment. Results After 21 weeks treatment of valsartan, blood pressure was reduced significantly （P〈 0.01）,ISI was increased（P〈0.01）.Interventricular septum thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness,left ventricular mass and index of left ventricular mass were improved significantly （P〈0.01）. Conclusion Blood pressure were decreased significantly. Insulin resistance and left ventricular hypertrophy were improved by the treatment of valsartan in patients with essential hypertension.
