Objective To examine sexual behaviors, HIV/syphilis infection and their changing trends among MSM in the Chinese mainland during 2001 - 2006. Methods All published data related to the survey among MSM in the mainland were searched and tabulated. Meta-analysis was conducted to obtain overall estimation of different variables on sexual behaviors and HIV/syphilis infection among MSM.Results Nearly 50% of the surveyed MSM had college education. About 20% of them were students;75% were unmarried and the mobile population accounted for 25% .About 60% of them claimed that they were gay and 70 % had their first sex with another man,The rate of unprotected sex was as high as 75 % or more and they had poor self-protection awareness. Anal sex was the fundamental sex behavior. The syphilis infection rate was nearly 4 % among them, while the HIV infection rate was nearly 2 %. An irregular trend was observed between 2001 and 2006. Conclusions Existing data collected in 2001 - 2006 allowed us to understand the basic demographic characteristics of the MSM population, sexual behaviors and the syphilis and HIV infection rate among them. Due to inconsistent methodology employed in the survey which was conducted mainly in big cities,it would be difficult to make an accurate assessment of the overall composition of MSM population, their behavioral characteristics and state of HIV/ syphilis infection in the Chinese mainland, and a national survey using standardized methodology and protocol will be needed in the future.
