Objective： To understand the practical application frequency of health assessment in clinical nursing work, and to provide the basis for health assessment practice teaching reform. Method： Using questionnaires, 671 nurses from seven tertiary hospitals in Nanjing were investigated on the practical application frequency of health assessment in the clinical work and their demands and recognition of the health assessment practice teaching. Results： The survey results showed that 92.55% of the clinical nursing staff believe ＂health assessment＂ was a bridge-course, 97.17% believe that it is necessary to strengthen the practical teaching; the top three operating items which application frequency was 3 to 4 times weekly and sorted by percentage are as follows： collection of the health history （84.80%）, ECG （37.41%）, abdominal examination （24.14%）. Conclusion： It should focus on strengthening the health assessment practical training in the teaching process, to enhance nursing students＇ comprehensive competitiveness.
