The engineering project of Binhe North Road in Tanghe County covers the Nanquan Ruins. In order to protect the cultural landscape, it was determined to design a viaduct to span the historical cultural sites so as to actively use the space under the bridge. By taking the would-be- covered Nanquan Ruins as the key consideration, the following design measures were put forward for the proper use of the space under the bridge： the bridge should be tailored in accordance with the historical heritage; the environment under the bridge should be restored by taking into consid- eration of the local characteristics; the mirror principle would be followed to create an integrated relationship between the bridge and the landscape; an innovative management for the space under the bridge should be made by working together with the cultural administration. The successful application of viaducts to protect historical landscapes not only expands the application mode of the space under a bridge, but also provides a new applicable method for the protection of historical landscapes.
