Sub healthy state refers to a series of clinical symptoms put forward by the WHO, which is a marginal condition between health and illness and also known as the “third state” or “gray state”. The disease incubating state in the light of the pre disease theory in Chinese medicine is equivalent to the sub healthy state. It is caused by improper diet, irregular life, depression, overstrain, old age, and weakness, which in turn leads to the disharmony between yin and yang, or internal generation of five pathogens, or impairment of vital qi. This can be classified in accordance with the symptomatic characteristics into five categories, i.e., that due to qi stagnation of the liver, internal generation of phlegm and dampness, deficiency of heart and spleen, deficiency of yin of liver and kidney, and deficiency of yang of the spleen and kidney. They can be differentiated and treated accordingly.
