Objective To evaluate Daily dietary behaviors and physical activities of Chinese middle school students. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 16580 students in the first grade at junior high school and senior high school levels from May to June 1999 in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Shenyang and Yunnan. Results Among the surveyed students, Only 25.7% of students ate often fruits and vegetables, 34.6% rarely ate foods rich in fat, 31.2% thought they were overweight and 34.3% took measures to lose weight; 47.0% took part in sports activities frequently, 37.4% often walked or bicycled for a duration of 30 minutes or more continuously; 88.9% reported attending physical education class twice or more a week, however, only 65.1% took more than 20 minutes of exercise during a physical education class. Conclusions It is necessary for middle school students to receive nutrition education on balanced diets and physical training.
