Objective To investigate relationships between adiponectin（ APN） gene ＋ 45 nucleotide T/G polymorphism and serum APN level with metabolic syndrome（ MS） in Hui and Han nationalities in Ningxia. Methods 136 Han patients with MS as MS group,as well as Hui healthy people（ n = 98） and Han healthy people（ 102） as control group were included the study. Polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism（ PCR- RFLP） and enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay（ ELISA） were used to detect the gene polymorphism of APN and the serum APN level. Results The frequencies of genotype and allele were significantly different between Hui MS group and Han MS group（ both P 〈0. 05）,and there were also significant differences between Hui control group and Han control group. The frequencies of GG genotype and G allele in Hui MS group were higher than those in Hui control group（ both P 〈0. 05）. The frequencies of genotype and allele were not significantly different between Han MS group and Han control group（ both P 〈0. 05）. Compared with the control group,the serum APN level in MS group was lower in both Hui and Han nationalities（ both P 〈0. 05）. The serum APN level in subject with TG ＋ GG genotypes was lower than that with TT genotype in Hui nationality（ P 〈0. 05）.The serum APN level in subject with TT genotypes was lower than that with TG ＋ GG genotype in Han nationality（ P 〈0. 05）. Logistic regression analysis showed that APN ＋ 45 T / G gene polymorphisms were the risk factors for metabolic syndrome in Hui subjects.Conclusion There is racial difference between Hui and Han nationalities with APN ＋ 45 gene polymorphism. The serum APN level in MS patients is reduced in both Hui and Han nationalities,and APN ＋ 45 T / G polymorphism may be associated with MS in Hui nationalities but not in Han nationalities in Ningxia.
