Objective:To investigate the influence of five elements music therapy of traditional Chinese medicine on the mental health of elderly patients with depression.Methods:A total of 91 patients with elderly depression were divided into3 groups according to prospective,randomized,and controlled ways.The 3 groups were treatment with different type of music(treatment with five elements music),positive controlled group(treatment with western music)and negative controlled group(not treatment with any music).Patients in each group were listening to different music on the basis of conventional anti-depression treatment.Before and after 4 weeks’treatment,the Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS),Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD,24)and symptom check list 90(SCL-90)were assessed.Results:SDS scores,SCL-90 total score and partial factor scores of elderly patients with depression were significantly higher than those of the national norm,five elements music therapy can reduce the SDS scores,HAMD total score and partial factor scores,SCL-90 total score and partial factor scores of elderly patients with depression,the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:Five-element music therapy can improve the mental health of elderly patients with depression.
