Methods Group selection 96 patients with thymoma in our hospital from February 2009 to February 2016 were selected as the research objects and were randomly divided into two groups, 48 cases in each group. Patients in the study group were treated with video-assisted thoracic surgery while patients in the control group were treated with traditional open chest surgery. Intraoperative and postoperative conditions and the occurrence of complications of the patients in two groups were observed and compared. Results The length of incision, blood loss in operation, postop-erative drainage and hospital stay in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group （P﹤0.05）. The incidence rate of the study group was 4.17%, which was significantly lower than that of the control group （P﹤0.05）. Conclusion Video-assisted thoracic surgery has the advantages of small incision, less trauma, faster recovery, less complications and so on compared to the traditional open chest surgery.
