Based on the similarity theory and the outburst erosion principle,the model experiments on flood overtopping failure of tailings dam under different reinforcement densities were carried out,and the influence law of reinforcement density on overtopping failure of tailings dam was analyzed. The results showed that with the increase of reinforcement density,the mechanical strength of tailings dam increased significantly,however,it also led to the rise of saturation lines in the dam. The increase of reinforcement density made the breach convert from ＂ Y＂ type to ＂ H＂ type,and it blocked the development of overtopping failure,so the dam displacement and internal stress variation decreased obviously. The increase of reinforcement density improved the erosion resistibility of dam,weakened the pull effect of flood on tailings at both sides of erosion gully,so as to ensure the stability of dam on both wings of erosion gully. The increase of reinforcement density could effectively reduce the dam displacement and the development of breach depth and width,but when the reinforcement strip was more than two layers,the increase of reinforcement strip layer number had mainly no influence on the depth and width of dam breach.The results discussed the influence law of reinforcement density on overtopping failure,which provides scientific basis for research on the reinforcement of tailings dam.
