The proportion of cracking and scrapping is about 20% for a type of 42CrMo4 steel hollow spindle of wind power after quenching and tempering heat treatment. In this paper, this type of product is carried out a series of physical and chemical tests, such as composition inspection, performance inspection and metallographic examination. According to the theoretical knowledge in reference literature, it is analyzed and discussed that the quenching cooling rate is reduced by reducing the water cooling time to obtain the tempered sorbite + granular bainite tempering structure + bainitic ferrite bar structure, which the cracking risk of product is reduced and the qualified mechanical properties are ensured.
