Objective To investigate the clinical effect of Best Agarwood Production on insomnia, anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with insomnia. Methods A total of 120 patients with insomnia were enrolled in the study and were randomly divided into two groups:the control group and the experimental group. Patients in the experimental group received agarwood treatment before going to bed every night, and patients in the control group received glycerol fumigation treatment that did not affect sleep. The scores of pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scale, the pre-sleep arousal scale (PSAS),the insomnia severity index (ISI) scale, and the generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7) and the patient health questionnaire scale (PHQ-9) were evaluated after 3 weeks of continuous treatment to compare the changes in insomnia, anxiety and depressive symptoms between the two groups. Results After 3 weeks of treatment, the PSQI score,PSAS score, and ISI score in the experimental group were significantly decreased (all P < 0.05 ),the sleep efficiency was significantly increased ( P < 0.01 ),and the sleep latency was significantly shortened ( P <0.001),the GAD-7 and the PHQ-9 score were significantly decreased (GAD-7:P < 0.05 ,PHQ-9:P < 0.01 ). The differences were statistically significant compared with those in the control group. The clinical efficacy of agarwood was not significantly different between different gender and age stratification. Conclusion Agarwood treatment can significantly improve the quality of sleep and the severity of insomnia in patients with insomnia, and improve the emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression.
