The contemporary British woman writer Claire McFall alternately uses both realistic narration and non-realistic narration to construct an underworld beyond the real life in her novel Ferryman, telling the story of the protagonist Dylan’s salvation journey of being-toward-death. The novelist uses the dual narrative structure flexibly. In the carefully arranged worlds of life and death, the dilemma and confusions in real life contrast with the love and warmth in the world of death. The helplessness of life and the hope of death are in stark contrast. The author presents Dylan’s death journey here to comprehend life through death, to dispel the mist of reality and to explore the meaning of life that is difficult to define. Through a close reading of the narrative text, this article attempts to analyze the spatial pattern, functions of characters and salvation approaches of the protagonist Dylan’s salvation journey according to narrative theory. It shows Claire McFall’s views on how human beings achieve salvation when in predicament and her reflections on contemporary society and interpersonal relationships.
