Objective To understand the health literacy status of Chongqing residents and its influencing factors. Methods Multistage cluster sampling and PPS sampling method was adopted to select survey respondents,the results were analyzed by single-factor and multi-factor statistical method and standardized according to the national unified method. Results In total 1511 of residents participated in the survey in 2012,1368 valid data was used in the analysis. There were 782( 57. 16%) urban participants and 586( 42. 84%) rural ones; there were 200( 14. 62%) main city participants and 1168( 85. 38%) suburbs( county) ones; the number of male and female participants was 713( 52. 12%) and 655( 47. 88%) respectively and the ratio is 1. 09 ∶ 1. The overall level of adjusted health literacy( AHL) among Chongqing residents in 2012 was 4. 94%. The AHL rates in the three aspects of health literacy,basic health concept and knowledge,healthy lifestyle and behaviors,and health related skills were 9. 51%,5. 16% and 5. 99%,respectively. The AHL rate of6 health issues as to safety and first aid,scientific attitude towards health,infectious diseases prevention,health information literacy,basic medical care,and chronic diseases prevention among Chongqing residents was 22. 26%,20. 76%,10. 79%,9. 97%,5. 55% and 4. 39%,respectively. Conclusion The health literacy level of Chongqing residents is low,the analysis verified that health literacy was limited and influenced by educational level,family income,geographic position and other factors; it requires multi-section’s effort on increasing sustained investment of health education and the guarantee of policy to improve the health literacy level.
