Zebra mussels have spread rapidly across the United States, with 31 states reporting infestations as of 2019. Zebra mussels were first detected in South Dakota, USA, in 2015 in Lewis and Clark Lake and McCook Lake, with subsequent infestations occurring in Lake Yankton in 2017, Lakes Francis Case and Sharpe in 2019, and Pickerel Lake, Kampeska Lake, and Lake Cochrane in 2020. Over the past few years, environment-friendly green synthetic methods for metal nanoparticles(NPs) have received considerable attention. The use of plant extracts is considered as potential for the biosynthesis of metal NPs due to its easier obtainment, cheap accessibility to industrial scale-up and high biosecurity. Herein, with the aqueous leaf extract of barley leaves as the template, we reported a rapid, single step, cost-effective and eco-friendly synthetic route to prepare new gold nanoparticles(BL-Au NPs).Significantly, except for the key role as the reducing, barley leaves was further utilized as the capping agent that ensure the stability of the BL-Au NPs. The characterization results of TEM, FTIR and UV-vis indicated that the gold nanoparticles coated with barley leaves extract were successfully synthesized. In vitro and zebra fish toxicity and stability assays demonstrated its good biocompatibility and high colloidal stability. The CT images in vitro demonstrated that the constructed BL-Au NPs possessed superiority in X-ray attenuation ability compared to clinically commonly used iodinated small molecular contrast agent. And BL-Au NPs can be used as contrast agent for effective CT imaging of zebra fish model. These results suggest the potential utility of BL-Au NPs as a CT imaging contrast agent in clinical CT imaging based diagnosis. 展开更多

Use of GIS to Determine Potential Sources of Aquatic Invasive Species Invasions into Western South Dakota Reservoirs 认领

The spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) is a constant threat for western US waters. The state of South Dakota detected zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) for the first time at Lewis and Clark Reservoir in 2014. Since then, efforts have been towards preventing their further expansion. To determine possible avenues of infestation westward, we used ArcGIS to map the home zip codes of boaters using four western reservoirs (Belle Fourche Reservoir, Pactola Reservoir, Sheridan Lake and Angostura Reservoir). A 60-mile buffer was used to determine spatial relationships of boater zip codes to establish zebra mussel populations and was considered areas of high risk. We found that there were three instances where a boater came from a high-risk area during the study period. Our results show possible pathways for Dreissena expansion into western South Dakota reservoirs. Most notably is that exposure can occur from either an inter- or intra-state vector. This information confirmed that there is a risk of additional water bodies in South Dakota becoming infected. Based on past studies, prevention is the best method in slowing the expansion of zebra mussels in South Dakota. We suggest three actions, strategically placed decontamination stations, continued public awareness efforts and differentiating boat registration tags on watercraft that are near infested water bodies. 展开更多

Several treatment options have been developed to minimize the spread of zebra mussel Dreissena polymorphaveligers (larvae) during fish transportation. However, the effect of these treatments on the survival of newly-fertilized salmonid eggs has not been evaluated. This study examined the survival of water-hardened landlocked fall Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha eggs after one of four different treatments: 1) Control (no chemicals), 2) 100 mg/L formalin for two hours, 3) 750 mg/L of potassium chloride for one hour followed by 20 mg/L formalin for two hours, and 4) 750 mg/L of potassium chloride for one hour followed by 20 mg/L formalin for three hours. The 100 mg/L formalin treatment produced complete egg mortality. Survival to hatch was not significantly different among the other three treatments. Based on these results, the use of 750 mg/L potassium chloride for one hour followed by 20 mg/L formalin for three hours is recommended when moving Chinook salmon eggs from waters potentially infested with zebra mussels to hatcheries for incubation. 展开更多

Wildlife conservation is essential, especially for countries like Kenya which rely on tourism as a major earner of foreign exchange. Conservation of species with minimal ecological information such as Grevy’s zebra, though a challenge, is critical to enable the future survival of such species. Grevy’s and Plains zebra have been classified as endangered and near-threatened by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) respectively, with Grevy’s zebra found mostly in Northern Kenya and Ethiopia. This has been due to habitat degradation from livestock grazing, local hunting and development of resorts. Six prediction variables i.e. rainfall, temperature, land use, population, NDVI and cattle occurrence were used in Maxent algorithm to produce a habitat prediction map for both species. Both prediction maps had an AUC > 0.75, which is adequate for conservation planning. Niche similarity based on Warren’s I index (I = 0.78) indicates that both zebra species are identical based on their occupied niche environments, suggesting that similar conversation strategies can be adopted for both species. 展开更多

Studies of problems involving physical anisotropy are applied in sciences and engineering,for instance,when the thermal conductivity depends on the direction.In this study,the multigrid method was used in order to accelerate the convergence of the iterative methods used to solve this type of problem.The asymptotic convergence factor of the multigrid was determined empirically(computer aided)and also by employing local Fourier analysis(LFA).The mathematical model studied was the 2D anisotropic diffusion equation,in whichε>0 was the coefficient of a nisotropy.The equation was discretized by the Finite Difference Method(FDM)and Central Differencing Scheme(CDS).Correction Scheme(CS),pointwise Gauss-Seidel smoothers(Lexicographic and Red-Black ordering),and line Gauss-Seidel smoothers(Lexicographic and Zebra ordering)in x and y directions were used for building the multigrid.The best asymptotic convergence factor was obtained by the Gauss-Seidel method in the direction x for 0<ε<<1 and in the direction y forε>>1.In this sense,an xy-zebra-GS smoother was proposed,which proved to be efficient and robust for the different anisotropy coefficients.Moreover,the convergence factors calculated empirically and by LFA are in agreement. 展开更多

This invited review is based upon a recent oral paper I presented at the Virtual Reality Symposiumof the 34th International Ethological Conference (2015, Cairns, Australia), and as such it describesstudies conducted mainly in my own laboratory. It reviews how we utilized visual stimuli for induc-ing behavioral responses in the zebrafish with a focus on shoaling, group forming behavior. Thezebrafish is gaining increasing popularity in neuroscience. With this interest, its behavior is alsomore frequently studied. One of the many advantages of the zebrafish over traditional laboratoryrodents is that this species is diurnal, and it relies heavily upon its visual system. Thus, similarly toour own species, zebrafish respond to visual stimuli in a robust and easily quantifiable manner. Forthe past decade, we have been exploring how to use such visual stimuli, and have developed nu-merous paradigms with which we can induce and quantify a variety of behavioral responses,including shoaling. This review summarizes some of these studies, and discusses questions includ-ing whether one should use live fish as stimulus, whether and how one could present animated(moving images) of fish, and how one could optimize a range of stimulus presentation parametersto elicit the most robust responses in zebrafish. Although the zebrafish is a relative newcomer inethology and behavioral neuroscience, and although many of our findings only represent the firststeps in this research, our results suggest that the behavioral analysis of the zebrafish will have animportant place in biomedical research. 展开更多

Economic Cost of Pedestrian Injuries in Stockholm City 认领

Objective: To conduct a cost analysis of pedestrian injuries at zebra crossings (marked lines only) in Stockholm city during 2008, and propose an intervention for reducing these incidents. Cost savings for the intervention are calculated and presented. Method: A Cost of Illness (COI) method was used to calculate the cost for pedestrian injuries at zebra crossings. Cost of Illness included direct and indirect costs and excluded intangible costs due to lack of data. Data and statistics from STRADA, PAR and calculations from MSB were used to perform the COI. Results: During 2008, 73 pedestrians were injured at zebra crossings in Stockholm city, amounting an estimated social cost of 10.8 million Swedish Krona (SEK) (severe injuries 9.2 million SEK, minor injuries 1.6 million SEK). The costs for reducing pedestrian injuries and related social burden via the proposed intervention (zebra crossings constructed alongside asphalt speed bumps with adjacent lights on both sides of the crossing) were estimated to be 250,000 SEK at roads without intersections, and 1.6 million SEK at roads with an intersection. Conclusion: Pedestrian injuries place a large financial burden on society each year. It is recommended to add speed bumps and adjacent lights to zebra crossings where most pedestrian injuries occur. The intervention would reduce pedestrian injuries and also decrease the cost for the society due to these injuries. Cost savings for the intervention depend on the kind of injury avoided and what kind of road the intervention is built on. 展开更多

Remote cerebellar hemorrhages (RCHs) are rare complications of intracranial or spinal interventions. We describe a patient with an RCH that occurred after a frontal lobectomy for an intracranial tumor. A 41-year-old female patient with a headache and partial seizures underwent a right frontal lobectomy upon detection of a right frontal mass. An RCH (zebra sign) was detected on a control cranial computed tomography (CT), which was performed upon detection of frontal lobe syndrome and mild ataxia in the patient postoperatively. Although the mechanism underlying the occurrence of RCHs after intracranial procedures is not clear, they have been attributed to an imbalance between intravascular pressure and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) due to rapid drainage of the fluid, causing bleeding in the cerebellar parenchyma. Generally, bilateral superior cerebellar injury produces parallel flat hyperdense areas known as the zebra sign on CT. The prognosis of a cerebellar hemorrhage is generally good, and it can be treated with a conservative approach. Controlled drainage of CSF during surgery and selecting an appropriate surgical position perioperatively will reduce the risk of RCHs. 展开更多

目的系统评价EB病毒Zta抗体检测用于鼻咽癌诊断的准确性。方法全文检索中国期刊全文数据库(CNKI,1979-2012)、万方数据知识平台(1990-2012)、维普出版平台(1989-2012)和PubMed(1966-2012),结合手动检索,按照纳入和排除标准筛选... 目的系统评价EB病毒Zta抗体检测用于鼻咽癌诊断的准确性。方法全文检索中国期刊全文数据库(CNKI,1979-2012)、万方数据知识平台(1990-2012)、维普出版平台(1989-2012)和PubMed(1966-2012),结合手动检索,按照纳入和排除标准筛选文献,提取纳入文献的诊断准确性指标的数据。按QUADAS量表对纳入研究进行质量评价,采用MetaDisc 1.4软件检验研究间的异质性,并对诊断准确性指标进行Meta分析,绘制综合受试者工作特征曲线。结果从202篇中文文献和31篇英文文献中筛选出17篇符合标准的文献,总计鼻咽癌病例1 645例,对照组10 177例。研究间各诊断准确性指标均存在高度异质性,采用随机效应模型合并计算各诊断准确性评价指标。合并灵敏度为0.87(95%CI:0.86~0.89),合并特异度为0.94(95%CI:0.93~0.94),合并阳性似然比为8.05(95%CI:5.59~11.59),合并阴性似然比为0.16(95%CI:0.12~0.21),合并诊断优势比为52.93(95%CI:29.95~93.56),综合受试者工作曲线下面积为0.935 2。亚组分析显示在对照为其他EB相关疾病的研究中,诊断特异度为0.71(95%CI:0.66~0.76),低于对照为一般人群的研究。结论 EB病毒Zta IgG抗体检测用于鼻咽癌诊断的准确性较高,特别是在鼻咽癌筛查中具有很高的特异度,该检测具有良好的应用前景,应加强研制开发该种检测的体外诊断试剂盒。 展开更多

探明斑马肾上腺的组织学结构,为深入研究斑马的生理学、病理学和保护濒危物种的生物多样性提供形态学依据。采用石蜡切片,HE染色和Masson染色技术,显微摄影,以及图像分析技术,与家畜的肾上腺进行比较,研究了斑马肾上腺的组织结构... 探明斑马肾上腺的组织学结构,为深入研究斑马的生理学、病理学和保护濒危物种的生物多样性提供形态学依据。采用石蜡切片,HE染色和Masson染色技术,显微摄影,以及图像分析技术,与家畜的肾上腺进行比较,研究了斑马肾上腺的组织结构特点。结果显示斑马肾上腺具有以下特点:表面结缔组织被膜较厚,平均厚度大约230μm。被膜内有大量神经和血管分布。皮质约为髓质面积的5倍。皮质球状带厚度大约300μm,比较薄,细胞排列成柱状、团块状;束状带厚度1750μm左右。约为球状带的6倍,细胞排列成条索状;网状带厚度250μm左右,网状带细胞与髓质紧密相邻并与之形成参差不齐的锯齿状界限;网状带中含有神经元。斑马髓质染色比较深,面积大约4mm2。髓质细胞比较大,胞质嗜碱性。髓质中未见到交感神经节细胞;髓质中央静脉内壁局部发现有结缔组织,且其中含有神经元。该研究结果为深入研究斑马的形态学、生理学和病理学提供可靠的形态学依据。 展开更多
