Public safety provides new statutory protections for whistleblowers:Legislation enacted in order to address medical error and failures of hospital quality systems has paradoxically created mechanisms that are used to silence physicians and other caregivers who seek to protect patient safety by reporting breaches of professional quality and integrity.The laws enacted to protect patients can be and are currently misused to silence whistleblowers through punitive legal proceedings against patient safety advocates.Summary suspensions,deprivation of due process,and transfer of adjudicative authority to the hands of the institutions that most require oversight undermines transparency and patient advocacy.A modest set of statutory amendments,prophylactic and remedial,especially to prevent premature reporting of summary suspensions,can counteract these inequities and rebalance the House of Medicine so as to protect both patients and those who would seek to ensure their safety,so it may do no harm. 展开更多

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by a loss of upper and lower motor neurons with neither clear pathogenesis nor effective treatment. Thus, potential biomarkers are needed to classify the disease and find new drug targets. Previous studies have shown that auto-antibodies against the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 (LRP4), called the anti-LRP4 antibodies, are found in ~23% patients of Greek and Italian ALS cohorts,[1] and in 10% of the American ALS population.[2] Anti-LRP4 antibodies were previously identified in myasthenia gravis (MG), the most common neuromuscular junction (NMJ) disorder, and were shown to cause NMJ abnormality in animal studies.[3] Here, we studied anti-LRP4 antibodies in Chinese patients and investigated the correlation between anti-LRP4 antibodies and abnormal neuromuscular transmission in ALS. 展开更多

To the Editor:Alcohol-induced heart defect is one of the most important clinical manifestations of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder(FASD),characterized by atrioventricular septal defect and arterial conical deformity.[1]Resveratrol,a polyphenol component of the traditional Chinese herb Polygonum cuspidatum,which is mainly extracted from its rhizome,is known to exhibit beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system.For example,resveratrol has beneficial effects on heart dysfunction,myocardial hypertrophy,and pressure overload.Moreover,resveratrol was found to inhibit platelet aggregation,prevent atherosclerosis,and scavenge free radicals.[2]However,the effect of resveratrol on alcohol-induced heart defect during heart formation is still unknown.The unique characteristics of zebrafish embryos,such as their transparent body,in vitro fertilization,and short reproductive cycle,make them an attractive tool for cardiovascular research.Moreover,the immersion-based alcohol delivery method used with zebrafish embryos is non-invasive unlike most of the alcohol administration protocols applied in rodent models. 展开更多

Glucosinolates are amino acid-derived secondary metabolites that act as chemical defense agents against pests.However,the presence of high levels of glucosinolates severely diminishes the nutritional value of seed meals made from rapeseed(Brassica napus L.).To identify the loci affecting seed glucosinolate cont ent(SGC),we con ducted genome-wide resequencing in a population of 307 diverse B.napus accessions from the three B.napus ecotype groups,namely,spring,winter,and semi-winter.These resequencing data were used for a genome-wide association study(GWAS)to identify the loci affecting SGC.In the three ecotype groups,four comm on and four ecotype-specific haplotype blocks(HBs)were significantly associated with SGC.To identify candidate genes controlling SGC,transcriptome analysis was carried out in 36 accessions showing extreme SGC values.Analyses of haplotypes,genomic variation,and candidate gene expression pointed to five and three candidate genes in the common and spring group-specific HBs,respectively.Our expression analyses dem on strated that additive effects of the three candidate genes in the spring group-specific HB play important roles in the SGC of B.napus. 展开更多

Protection of various materials against hydration is of continuing interest to chemists and material scientists. We report on stabilization of porous surface of activated -alumina spheres (AAS) against hydration by an adhesive coat of nano-magnetite particles. The nano-Fe3O4-coated AAS were prepared in the ultrasound-agitated suspension of magnetite nanoparticles in heptane and were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET surface area analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is deduced that nanoparticle-alumina bonding interaction in non-polar organic solvent is enhanced by van der Waals attractive forces and that sonication induces changes in alumina morphology only in regions of contact between alumina and magnetite nanoparticles. The coated AAS submerged in still water avoid hydration and remain permeable by small gaseous (N2) molecules, while those soaked in moving water lose part of their coat and undergo hydration. The pristine and the coated AAS were briefly compared for their ability to degrade model antibiotics by using LC-MS analysis. It is confirmed that the degradation of trimethoprim is more efficient on the coated AAS. Our results are challenging for further research of Coulombic interactions between nano-particles and appropriate solid supports. 展开更多

The Holocaust commemoration has undergoneseveral changes during the past seventy years, and now is maintainednot only by the state from above but also by the general public frombelow. This results in pluralistic ways of remembering the victimsand their suffering. Although the generation of survivors is fading,the commemoration becomes ever more thriving and variegated. Thearticle compares this Israeli experience with China’s commemorationof the War of Resistance against Japanese Invasion. Commemorationin China is reminiscent of what was normative in Israel fifty years ago:it is directed primarily by the state, is highly politicized, and has little room for commemorating individual victims. The de–personalized way of commemoration, in addition to manipulation of memories in a variety of low–quality TV serials prevents the general public from full identification with the victims of Japanese aggression. The article analyzes lessons from changing ways of commemorating the Holocaust in Israel, suggesting novel ways of teaching the painful past to young generations in China. 展开更多
