Shape grammars as a reverse engineering method for the morphogenesis of architectural facade design

The field of shape grammars spans 47 years,but its potential in the practice and education of art,architecture,and engineering remains far from being utilized.Similarly,while reverse engineering in some engineering disciplines is well-established,its implementation in architectural design remains under-represented.By combining the two domains,this paper develops a novel method that merges the power of shape grammars as a parsing tool in reverse engineering to decode the morphogenesis of visual compositions in architectural design.The merged power is demonstrated by decoding the formal language of a faqade design of a case study,in which seemingly few simple rules can derive surprisingly complex compositions.The rules of the language can then be used to reconstruct parts of the case facade.Most shape grammars in the architectural literature are applied on formal historical precedents,but the subject of morphological analysis in this paper is contemporary and has a style that exhibits non-orthogonal configurations,which initially appear far from being standardized or subjected to regulatory tectonic rules.The faqade derivation grammar is explained and resynthesized in various computations to explore emergent articulations that display its predictive,synthetic,and generative powers in addition to typical analytic ones. 展开更多

Over the last three decades,the Middle East(ME)region has experienced rapid economic and infrastructure transformation.Most of the dwelling places have fully adopted western architectural trends ignoring both the cultural and environmental fundamentals of the region.The paper is incorporated with a Ph.D.research,it is cognizant of the fact that socio-demographics has changed over the years.Large cities in the region have experienced massive population growth which has made traditional architectural(TA)less suitable.This study is focused on identifying how recent innovation and technologies can be used in the adaptation of architectonic traditions.Seeking to identify how the inherent sustainability characteristics of TA can be integrated with modern architectural studies for cultural relevant and sustainable dwellings in the ME.An investigation in houses in Riyadh City,Saudi Arabia where the climate is mostly hot and arid will serve as the case study for this research because of its strong history in TA coupled with proliferation of western architecture.Research will utilize a qualitative data because it is inclusive of situational descriptions,events and observed behaviors.It will enable findings based from the participants view to cultural existence and change,and meanings important to them.Moreover,researcher will rely on the themes as the main backbone on what the study is trying to bring out.Thus,will ensure findings end up with what is appreciated for environmental housing application not only based on climate control but also based on other psychological and visual components. 展开更多

A Creative Approach to Reducing Ambiguity in Scenariobased Software Architecture Analysis

In software engineering, a scenario describes an anticipated usage of a software system. As scenarios are useful to understand the requirements and functionalities of a software system, the scenario-based analysis is widely used in various tasks, especially in the design stage of software architectures. Although researchers have proposed various scenario-based approaches to analyse software architecture, there are still limitations in this research field, and a key limitation is that scenarios are typically not formally defined and thus may contain ambiguities. As these ambiguities may lead to defects, it is desirable to reduce them as many as possible. In order to reduce ambiguity in scenario-based software architecture analysis, this paper introduces a creative computing approach to scenario-based software requirements analysis. Our work expands this idea in three directions. Firstly, we extend an architecture description language (ADL)-based language- Breeze/ADL to model the software architecture. Secondly, we use a creative rule - combinational rule (CR) to combine the vector clock algorithm for reducing the ambiguities in modelling scenarios. Then, another creative rule - transformational rule (TR) is employed to help to transform our Breeze/ADL model to a popular model - unified modelling language (UML) model. We implement our approach as a plugin of Breeze, and illustrate a running example of modelling a poetry to music system in our case study. Our results show the proposed creative approach is able to reduce ambiguities of the software architecture in practice. 展开更多

Art and technology interactions in Islamic and Check fa Christian context: Historical approach to architectural globalization

Accordingly, this research was aimed at illuminating art and technology interactions in Islamic architecture during early globalization when it flourished along with Christian architecture. To this end, logical reasoning and qualitative data an alysis were performed in parallel on 12 chai ns of mostly worshipone nted artworks, such as mosques and churches. The results indicated that art and tech no logy interactions in Islamic and Christian architecture were underlain by the same nature and seque ntial pattern of begi nning from primitive tech no logy and endi ng with inn ovative technology (art). The cultural and technological value of these architectural styles eventually crossed geographical boundaries. Therefore, the beneficial interactions between art and technology enabled Islamic and Christian architecture to participate in globalization through the con veya nee of their value to other regi ons eve n as d if fere nces existed in the measures implemented for such transmission. 展开更多

The rapid consumption of fossil fuel and increased environmental damage caused by it have given a strong impetus to the growth and development of fuelefficient vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have evolved from their inchoate state and are proving to be a promising solution to the serious existential problem posed to the planet earth. Not only do HEVs provide better fuel economy and lower emissions satisfying environmental legislations, but also they dampen the effect of rising fuel prices on consumers. HEVs combine the drive powers of an internal combustion engine and an electrical machine. The main components of HEVs are energy storage system, motor, bidirectional converter and maximum power point trackers (MPPT, in case of solar-powered HEVs). The performance of HEVs greatly depends on these components and its architecture. This paper presents an extensive review on essential components used in HEVs such as their architectures with advantages and disadvantages, choice of bidirectional converter to obtain high efficiency, combining ultracapacitor with battery to extend the battery life, traction motors’ role and their suitability for a particular application. Inclusion of photovoltaic cell in HEVs is a fairly new concept and has been discussed in detail. Various MPPT techniques used for solar-driven HEVs are also discussed in this paper with their suitability. 展开更多

In the current context of climate change and ecological awareness,designing sustainable environments is definitely understood as a shared responsibility.With the construction sector consuming half of the world's energy,the role of some key stakeholders such as architects becomes even more critical when providing responsible and relevant design for the built environment.Thus,improving the way our environments are being designed challenges some cultural systems that show evident limits,such as the training of future architects and engineers.In this research,the focus is on architecture students and aims to demonstrate how the use of a new sustainable performance simulation tool,called Easy Approach for Sustainable and Environmental Design(EASED)could contribute to educate them about innovatively sustainable design.This was assessed through the evaluation of student engagement,their use of the tool and its appropriation.Results show that individual work was not convincing,whereas success was met during group work.Limits and improvement possibilities were found in the interface of EASED as well as in the educational set up of the tool. 展开更多

We develop a unified model, known as MgNet, that simultaneously recovers some convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image classification and multigrid (MG) methods for solving discretized partial differential equations (PDEs). This model is based on close connections that we have observed and uncovered between the CNN and MG methodologies. For example, pooling operation and feature extraction in CNN correspond directly to restriction operation and iterative smoothers in MG, respectively. As the solution space is often the dual of the data space in PDEs, the analogous concept of feature space and data space (which are dual to each other) is introduced in CNN. With such connections and new concept in the unified model, the function of various convolution operations and pooling used in CNN can be better understood. As a result, modified CNN models (with fewer weights and hyperparameters) are developed that exhibit competitive and sometimes better performance in comparison with existing CNN models when applied to both CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 data sets. 展开更多
