Coordinating ecosystem service trade-offs to achieve win–win outcomes: A review of the approaches

Ecosystem service(ES) trade-offs have been broadly recognized and studied over the past decade. Ecosystem service(ES) trade-offs have been broadly recognized and studied over the past decade. However, how to coordinate the relationships among ES trade-offs to achieve win–win outcomes remains a considerable challenge for decision makers. Here, we summarize the current approaches applied to minimize ES trade-offs for win–wins and analyze the trade-offs among different ESs and their drivers. Based on a systematic review of the literature from 2005 to 2018, we identified 170 potentially relevant articles, 47 of which were selected for the review,recording 70 actual or potential trade-offs. Analysis of these case studies showed that trade-off pairs between provisioning services and regulating services/biodiversity accounted for 80% of total pairs. Furthermore, more than half of the ES trade-offs were driven by land use/land cover changes. Harvest and resource demand, natural resource management, and policy instruments were also among the main drivers. Four approaches to coordinate ES trade-offs were identified, including ecosystem, landscape-scale, multi-objective optimization, and policy intervention(and other) approaches. Based on the above, we recommend a rigorous understanding of the roles of different stakeholders, spatial scales of management, trade-off dynamics, and integrated implementation of diverse approaches to coordinate ES trade-offs in order to better achieve win–win outcomes. 展开更多

The ecosystem service value of Jingtaichuan electric power irrigation engineering( referred to as Jingdian engineering) was divided into internal value( the value of farmland system,shelter forest system outside of farmland and wetland waters) and external value( the ecological service value of ecological migration to the vegetation restoration of the Qilian Mountains) firstly,and then it was analyzed by using the model method and the factor equivalent method. The results showed that the internal ecological service value of Jingdian engineering was 36. 3 ×10~8 yuan,which was 25. 0 times larger than the total annual cost. The external ecological service value was 40. 05 ×10~8 yuan,which was 27. 6 times larger than the total annual cost. Among the three functional systems,the ecological service value of farmland system was the largest. The ecological service value of farmland system was mainly reflected in waste disposal,wind prevention and sand fixation,and food production. The external ecological service value was mainly the ecological service value of migration to vegetation restoration in the Qilian Mountains. Jingdian engineering is the only highlifting project that raises water to the desert in China. It transfers water from outer basins to control desertification and provides a successful road for ecological migration and desertification control in arid areas. 展开更多

Smart, real-time, low-cost, and distributed ecosystem monitoring is essential for understanding and managing rapidly changing ecosystems. However, new techniques in the big data era have rarely been introduced into operational ecosystem monitoring, particularly for fragile ecosystems in remote areas.We introduce the Internet of Things(IoT) techniques to establish a prototype ecosystem monitoring system by developing innovative smart devices and using IoT technologies for ecosystem monitoring in isolated environments. The developed smart devices include four categories: large-scale and nonintrusive instruments to measure evapotranspiration and soil moisture, in situ observing systems for CO2 and d13 C associated with soil respiration, portable and distributed devices for monitoring vegetation variables, and Bi-CMOS cameras and pressure trigger sensors for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. These new devices outperform conventional devices and are connected to each other via wireless communication networks. The breakthroughs in the ecosystem monitoring IoT include new data loggers and longdistance wireless sensor network technology that supports the rapid transmission of data from devices to wireless networks. The applicability of this ecosystem monitoring IoT is verified in three fragile ecosystems, including a karst rocky desertification area, the National Park for Amur Tigers, and the oasis-desert ecotone in China. By integrating these devices and technologies with an ecosystem monitoring information system, a seamless data acquisition, transmission, processing, and application IoT is created. The establishment of this ecosystem monitoring IoT will serve as a new paradigm for ecosystem monitoring and therefore provide a platform for ecosystem management and decision making in the era of big data. 展开更多

The terrestrial carbon(C) cycle plays an important role in global climate change, but the vegetation and environmental drivers of C fluxes are poorly understood. We established a global dataset with 1194 available data across site-years including gross primary productivity(GPP), ecosystem respiration(ER), net ecosystem productivity(NEP), and relevant environmental factors to investigate the variability in GPP, ER and NEP, as well as their covariability with climate and vegetation drivers.The results indicated that both GPP and ER increased exponentially with the increase in mean annual temperature(MAT)for all biomes. Besides MAT, annual precipitation(AP) had a strong correlation with GPP(or ER) for non-wetland biomes.Maximum leaf area index(LAI) was an important factor determining C fluxes for all biomes. The variations in both GPP and ER were also associated with variations in vegetation characteristics. The model including MAT, AP and LAI explained 53%of the annual GPP variations and 48% of the annual ER variations across all biomes. The model based on MAT and LAI explained 91% of the annual GPP variations and 92.9% of the annual ER variations for the wetland sites. The effects of LAI on GPP, ER or NEP highlighted that canopy-level measurement is critical for accurately estimating ecosystem–atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide. The present study suggests a significance of the combined effects of climate and vegetation(e.g.,LAI) drivers on C fluxes and shows that climate and LAI might influence C flux components differently in different climate regions. 展开更多

运用遥感影像与地理信息系统技术结合,采用生态系统信息分类提取方法和景观指数方法对1990年至2015年泸沽湖风景区生态系统构成与格局变化进行分析,并进一步探析引起各类生态系统变化的驱动力因素,为泸沽湖风景区进一步生态与环境规划... 运用遥感影像与地理信息系统技术结合,采用生态系统信息分类提取方法和景观指数方法对1990年至2015年泸沽湖风景区生态系统构成与格局变化进行分析,并进一步探析引起各类生态系统变化的驱动力因素,为泸沽湖风景区进一步生态与环境规划提供科学和理论依据。25年间,泸沽湖风景区内主要生态系统类型可分为农田、森林、草地、水域和人居环境等五类生态系统,1990年至2005年,主要表现为农田、森林、草地3个生态系统之间相互转化;2005年至2015年,主要表现为森林、草地、水域生态系统整体流向农田、人居环境系统。总体上泸沽湖景观破碎化与复杂程度呈下降趋势,连通性和整体性逐渐增强,但各生态系统类型之间比例差异增大。农田生态系统变化的主要驱动力是政策导向;森林与草地生态系统变化的主要驱动力是退耕还林还草工程与人类活动;水域生态系统变化主要驱动因素是湿地造林与人类活动入侵;人居环境系统变化的主要驱动因素为人类用地需求的增涨。针对泸沽湖生态系统变化存在的问题提出了相应的规划建议。 展开更多

为从微观尺度分析不同农地整治模式对农户生态系统服务依赖度的影响及其差异,该文通过构建农户生态系统服务依赖度指数体系(index system of farmer dependence on ecosystem services,IDES),基于湖北省4县(市)483份农户调查数据,采用... 为从微观尺度分析不同农地整治模式对农户生态系统服务依赖度的影响及其差异,该文通过构建农户生态系统服务依赖度指数体系(index system of farmer dependence on ecosystem services,IDES),基于湖北省4县(市)483份农户调查数据,采用双重差分模型对比分析整治区与未整治区、新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区与地方政府主导模式整治区农户生态系统服务净收益和依赖度的差异。结果表明:农地整治后,整治区农户的供给服务收益、调节服务收益、文化服务收益、生态系统服务收益和其他社会经济活动收益分别增加33.20%、5.34%、35.09%、32.12%和33.23%,其中新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区分别增加53.06%、5.40%、33.33%、49.33%和42.40%,地方政府主导模式整治区分别增加6.46%、5.25%、38.89%、8.24%和27.02%,而同期未整治区分别增加17.01%、4.66%、22.34%、16.85%和22.98%;整治区农户的供给服务指数、调节服务指数、文化服务指数和生态系统服务依赖度总指数分别发生-28.60%、-21.05%、-6.45%和-26.91%的变化,其中新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区分别发生-36.57%、-24.69%、-16.24%和-34.52%的变化,地方政府主导模式整治区分别发生-18.97%、-17.27%、+16.42%和-17.59%的变化,而同期未整治区分别发生-8.34%、-13.39%、-4.10%和-8.36%的变化。这表明农地整治是优化农户收入结构和降低农户生态系统服务依赖度的有效途径,且新型农业经营主体主导模式的农地整治的作用效果明显大于地方政府主导模式的农地整治,地方政府主导模式的农地整治的作用效果仍有上升空间。研究结果可为实现生态系统服务与家庭福祉在微观尺度的结合提供理论支持和方法借鉴,也为农地整治项目的合理持续推进提供政策启示。 展开更多

Short-term effects of nitrogen deposition on soil respiration components in two alpine coniferous forests, southeastern Tibetan Plateau 预览

Nitrogen (N) deposition to alpine forest ecosystems is increasing gradually, yet previous studies have seldom reported the effects of N inputs on soil CO2 flux in these ecosystems. Evaluating the effects of soil respiration on N addition is of great significance for understanding soil carbon (C) budgets along N gradients in forest ecosystems. In this study, four levels of N (0, 50, 100, 150 kg N ha^-1 a^-1) were added to soil in a Picea baifouriana and an Abies georgei natural forest on the Tibetan Plateau to investigate the effect of the N inputs on soil respiration. N addition stimulated total soil respiration (Rt) and its components including heterotrophic respiration (Rh) and autotrophic respiration (Ra);however, the promoted effects declined with an increase in N application in two coniferous forests. Soil respiration rate was a little greater in the spruce forest (1.05 μmol CO2 m^-2 s^-1) than that in the fir forest (0.97 μmol CO2 m^-2 s^-1). A repeated measures ANOVA indicated that N fertilization had significant effects on Rt and its components in the spruce forest and Rt in the fir forest, but had no obvious effect on Rh or Ra in the fir forest. Rt and its components had significant exponential relationships with soil temperature in both forests. N addition also increased temperature sensitivity (Q10) of Rt and its components in the two coniferous forests, but the promotion declined as N in put increased. Important, soil moisture had great effects on Rt and its components in the spruce forest (P<0.05), but no obvious impacts were observed in the fir forest (P>0.05). Following N fertilization, Ra was significantly and positively related to fine root biomass, while Rh was related to soil enzymatic activities in both forests. The mechanisms underlying the effect of simulated N deposition on soil respiration and its components in this study may help in forecasting C cycling in alpine forests under future levels of reactive N deposition. 展开更多

Ecosystem services of urban green spaces play an important role in the sustainable development of the urban ecosystem.How to quantify the ecological benefits of urban green spaces and evaluate their ecological services is a hot topic in related fields.Currently,with the advancement of science and technology,the assessment method has been developed from the traditional ones such as the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers(CTLA)method,afforestation cost method,and carbon tax method to CITYgreen and i-Tree.The latter two models have been widely used in countries of Europe and America,while the use of i-Tree has not been promoted in China.In this paper,i-Tree Eco(UFORE)was selected for research,and its application in the assessment of the ecosystem services of urban green spaces,including energy saving,air quality improvement,interception of rainwater,and aesthetic benefits,were analyzed.This study aims to provide a theoretical and scientific basis for the introduction and localization of i-Tree,as well as its generalization in the assessment of forest ecosystem services domestically. 展开更多
