Comparison of Seismic Design Codes between China and the United States for Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls 预览

Because of its excellent seismic performance, reinforced soil retaining walls are increasingly used in civil engineering. Although many countries have published corresponding design codes, the differences between them are still relatively large. Using the FHWA Code and the Code for Seismic Design of Railway Engineering (CSDRE), stability calculations of reinforced soil retaining walls were carried out and the similarities and differences between these two design codes were analyzed. According to the comparative analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: the inertia force, the earth pressure and the tensile force of reinforcements calculated from the CSDRE are less than those from the FHWA Code, and the safety factor calculated from the former is larger. Although the M-O method is recommended to calculate the dynamic earth pressure, the FHWA Code suggests a higher action point as compared to the CSDRE. 展开更多

Grasping force estimation using surface Electromyography (sEMG) has been actively investigated as it can increase the manipulability and dexterity of prosthetic hands and robotic hands. Most of the current studies in this area only focus on finding the relationship between sEMG signals and the grasping force without considering the arm posture. Therefore, regression models are not suitable to predict grasping force in various arm postures. In this paper, a method to predict the grasping force from sEMG signals and various grasping postures is developed. The proposed algorithm uses a tensor algebra to train a multi-factor model relevant to sEMG signals corresponding to various grasping forces and postures of the wrist and forearm in multiple dimensions. The multi-factor model is then decomposed into four independent factor spaces of the grasping force, sEMG signals, wrist posture, and forearm posture. Moreover, when a participant executes a new posture, new factors for the wrist and forearm are interpolated in the factor spaces. Thus, the grasping force with various postures can be predicted by combining these factors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through experiments with ten healthy subjects, demonstrating the higher performance of proposed grasping force prediction method than the previous algorithm. 展开更多

Evolution of eukaryotes from simple cells to complex multicellular organisms remains a mystery. Our postulate is that cytoskeletal stiffening is a necessary condition for evolution of complex multicellular organisms from early simple eukaryotes. Recent findings show that embryonic stem cells are as soft as primitive eukaryotes-amoebae and that differentiated tissue cells can be two orders of magnitude stiffer than embryonic stem cells. Soft embryonic stem cells become stiff as they differentiate into tissue cells of the complex multicellular organisms to match their microenvironment stiffness. We perhaps see in differentiation of embryonic stem cells (derived from inner cell mass cells) the echo of those early evolutionary events. Early soft unicellular organisms might have evolved to stiffen their cytoskeleton to protect their structural integrity from external mechanical stresses while being able to maintain form, to change shape, and to move. 展开更多

Cholesterol plays a significant role in the organization of lipids and modulation of membrane dynamics in mammalian cells. However, the effect of cholesterol depletion on the eukaryotic cell membranes seems controversial. In this study, the effects of cholesterol on the topography and mechanical behaviors of CHO-K1 cells with manipulated membrane cholesterol contents were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. Here, we found that the depletion of cholesterol in cell membranes could increase the membrane stiffness, reduce the cell height as well as promote cell retraction and detachment from the surface, whereas the cholesterol restoration could reverse the effect of cholesterol depletion on the membrane stiffness. Increased methyl-β-cyclodextrin levels and incubation time could significantly increase Young’s modulus and degree of stiffing on cell membrane and cytoskeleton. This research demonstratede importance of cholesterol in regulating the dynamics of cytoskeleton-mediated processes. AFM technique offers excellent advantages in the dynamic monitoring of the change in membranes mechanical properties and behaviors during the imaging process. This promising technology can be utilized in studying the membrane properties and elucidating the underlying mechanism of distinct cells in the near-native environment. 展开更多

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) has such characteristics as light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance, so it is suitable for corrosive environment and large-span structures. This study investigated the stability of CFRP slender column, whose slenderness is greater than Euler’s critical load. The columns in this study were formed by a two-step process and the fiber direction was along the same direction of column axis. Firstly, we obtained the basic mechanical properties of the material by tensile experiment. Then, we studied the critical force of 10 CFRP columns with different lengths and widths by axial compression test. Finally, by comparing Euler’s formula with the modified Euler formula and combining with existing literature and experimental result of this paper, we proposed a modified Perry formula which could well predict the critical force of unidirectional CFRP extruded column and could be used for CFRP extruded column research and engineering design. 展开更多

Therefore, the dynamic property of six-axis force sensor which is installed on the end-effectors of intelligent robots will have influence on the veracity of detection and judgment to working environment contact force by intelligent robots directly. In this paper, dynamic analysis to double-layer and pre-stressed multi-limb six-axis force sensor is conducted. First, the structure of the sensor is introduced, and the limb number is confirmed by introducing the related definitions of convex analysis. Then, based on vibration of multiple-degree-of-freedom system, a mechanical vibration simplified model of double-layer and pre-stressed multiple limb six-axis force sensor is set up. After that, movement differential equations of sensor and the response of analytical expression are deduced, and the movement differential equations is solved. Finally, taking the double-layer and pre-stressed seven limb six-axis force sensor as an example, numerical calculation and simulation of deriving result is conducted, which verify the correctness and feasibility of the theoretical analysis. 展开更多

Abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA) is one of the most common and catastrophic manifestations of the acute aortic syndrome that can be treated with endovascular aneurysm repair(EVAR) which requires a specially designed stent-graft system.In this work, a self-expanding nickel–titanium(nitinol) stent-graft system is aiming at AAA using finite element analysis(FEA) methods to analyze both fatigue behaviors and radial forces.Based on the systematic analysis of the parametric variations, a final stent-graft system was developed by the selection and arrangement of the individual stent components, targeting an optimal performance for the treatment of AAA.Experimental tests, animal tests and clinical trials were carried out to confirm the results.Both animal trials and clinical trials showed comparable curative effects with Medtronic Endurant stent-graft(SG) systems. 展开更多

Influence of Axial Loads to Propagation Characteristics of the Elastic Wave in a Non-Uniform Shaft

The propagation characteristics of the elastic waves are a ected by the axial loads. The influence of the axial loads to the propagation characteristics of the elastic waves is studied in this paper. Firstly, the transfer matrix of the elastic waves for the non-uniform shaft with axial loads is deduced by combining the transfer matrix without axial load and the additional equation caused by the axial load. And then, a numerical method is used to study the influence of the axial load, non-uniformity and the rotating speed to the propagation characteristics of the elastic waves. It’s found that a new Stop Band will appear due to the axial force, and the central frequency of which will decrease as the increase of the force, while the band width of which remains the same. The central frequency of the new Stop Band will also increase as the increase of the cross-section area ratio;however, the rotating speed of the shaft doesn’t a ect the propagation characteristics of the elastic waves obviously. Finally, an experimental rig is built up for further study, even though there are some small local errors, the results of experiments match well with the numerical ones, which indicates the validation of the theoretical results. The result can help to study the influence of the axial load to the dynamics of a non-uniform shaft and help to reveal the vibration propagating mechanism in such a shaft. 展开更多

Based on the three-dimensional dispersive finite difference time domain method and Maxwell stress tensor equation,the optical trapping properties of nanoparticle placed on the gold film with periodic circular holes are investigated numerically. Surface plasmon polaritons are excited on the metal-dielectric interface, with particular emphasis on the crucial role in tailoring the optical force acting on a nearby nanoparticle. Utilizing a first order corrected electromagnetic field components for a fundamental Gaussian beam, the incident beam is added into the calculation model of the proposed method. To obtain the detailed trapping properties of nanoparticle, the selected calculations on the effects of beam waist radius, sizes of nanoparticle and circular holes, distance between incident Gaussian beam and gold film, material of nanoparticle and polarization angles of incident wave are analyzed in detail to demonstrate that the optical-trapping force can be explained as a virtual spring which has a restoring force to perform positive and negative forces as a nanoparticle moves closer to or away from the centers of circular holes. The results of optical trapping properties of nanoparticle in the vicinity of the gold film could provide guidelines for further research on the optical system design and manipulation of arbitrary composite nanoparticles. 展开更多
