To quantify the nonuniform micromechanical performance of welded joint,the load-displacement curves by nanoindentation test were introduced to examine different zones including base metal,coarse grained heat affected zone,partially melted zone,weld metal near the fusion boundary and weld metal center.The results showed that the strengthening effect of weld metal was more obvious than that of heat affected zone for nickel based welded joint and especially in coarse grained heat affected zone,the hardening resulted from overheating was not apparent.Nickel based weld metal with high content of alloying elements which were often segregated at interdendritic regions or precipitated in grain interior under nonequilibrium solidification contributed to the characteristics that differ from conventional low alloy steel welded joint. 展开更多

A common method to examine the current-limiting performance of saturated iron-core fault current limiter(SI-FCL) in high-voltage direct-current transmission based on voltage source converter(VSC-HVDC) systems is to solve differential equations based on the system fault transient characteristics and the equivalent inductance calculation equation. This method analyzes the fault current of the VSC-HVDC system in the time domain. However, it is computationally complex and cannot directly reflect the relationship between parameters and the currentlimiting effect of the SI-FCL.In this paper,the relationship between the magnetic flux density and magnetic field energy of the SI-FCL is analyzed. The energy exchange between the DC capacitor and the SI-FCL in the DC short circuit fault process is analyzed. From the perspective of electromagnetic energy conversion, the criterion for determining the current-limiting ability of the SI-FCL in the transient process is given based on the parameters of the SI-FCL and VSC-HVDC system. On this basis, the characteristics of the DC side fault current and the capacitor voltage when the SI-FCL has current-limiting ability are examined.Based on the parameters of the SI-FCL and VSC-HVDC system, a method for calculating the fault current peak value and capacitor voltage drop time is given. Finally, the accuracy of the analysis of the SI-FCL in the VSC-HVDC system based on the electromagnetic energy conversion mechanism is demonstrated through a case study and simulation results of the VSC-HVDC system with different SI-FCLs. 展开更多

Blend based polymer nanocomposites, comprising Janus nanoparticles at their polymer/polymer interface, were analytically/experimentally evaluated. The modeling procedure was performed in two stages: first, modeling of polymer/polymer interface region comprising Janus nanoparticles and second, modeling of the entire systems as a function of the variation of the blend morphology.In the first stage, the modeling procedure was performed based on the development of the model proposed by Ji et al. and in the second stage, the fundamental of Kolarik’s model was used in order to propose a developed and more practical model. It was shown that Janus nanoparticles may form dual polymer/particle interphase at polymer/polymer interface which can drastically affect the final mechanical properties of the system. Comparing the results of tensile tests imposed on different prepared samples with the predictions of the model proved its accuracy and reliability(error < 9%). 展开更多

We propose a modified random walk (MRW) algorithm with a novel regularization for the segmentation of DOCT vessel images. Based on MRW, we perform automatic boundary detection of the vascular wall from intensity images and boundary extraction of the blood flowing region from Doppler phase images. Dice, sensitivity, and specificity coefficients were adopted to verify the segmentation performance. The experimental study on DOCT images of the mouse femoral artery showed the effectiveness of our proposed method, yielding three-dimensional visualization and quantitative evaluation of the vessel. 展开更多

The system utilizes an electro-optic modulator and an optical filter to output a linear FMCW with a bandwidth of 2 GHz. The flexible and variable rotating double prism is used for beam scanning. The system adopts an adjustable configuration on pulse duration and pulse repetition frequency according to the distance. An experiment is carried out at a 25 m standoff with pulse duration of 80 ns, single pulse energy of 0.4 nJ, and pulse repetition frequency of 1 MHz. A waveform and spectrogram of the demodulated voice show that the pulsed LDV system has a good performance in long-range voice listening. 展开更多

Process safety in chemical industries is considered to be one of the important goals towards sustainable development. This is due to the fact that, major accidents still occur and continue to exert significant reputational and financial impacts on process industries. Alarm systems constitute an indispensable component of automation as they draw the attention of process operators to any abnormal conditi on in the plant. Therefore, if deployed properly, alarm systems can play a critical role in helping plant operators ensure process safety and profitability. How-ever, in practice, many process plants suffer from poor alarm system configuration which leads to nuisance alarms and alarm floods that compromise safety. A vast amount of research has primarily focused on developing sophisticated alarm management algorithms to address specific issues. In this article, we provide a simple, practical, systematic approach that can be applied by plant engineers (i.e., non-experts) to improve industrial alarm system performance. Recognition of the human actions by computer vision has become an active research area in recent years. Due to the speed and the high similarity of the actions, the current algorithms cannot get high recognition rate. A new recognition method of the human action is proposed with the multi-scale directed depth motion maps(MsdDMMs) and Log-Gabor filters. According to the difference between the speed and time order of an action, MsdDMMs is proposed under the energy framework. Meanwhile, Log-Gabor is utilized to describe the texture details of MsdDMMs for the motion characteristics. It can easily satisfy both the texture characterization and the visual features of human eye. Furthermore, the collaborative representation is employed as action recognition by the classification. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm, which is applied in the MSRAction3 D dataset and MSRGesture3 D dataset, can achieve the accuracy of 95.79% and 96.43% respectively. It also has higher accuracy than the existing algorithms, such as super normal vector(SNV), hierarchical recurrent neural network(Hierarchical RNN). 展开更多

In this paper,we report the experience received from the project-based learning activity in a fundamental chemistry course.We involved the first year students in Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi,Ratchaburi Learning Center,Thailand.This work considers the innovative activities performed in the field of chemistry and physics.This activity has been intensively implemented in teaching first year students.A project has been created to build up a small machine for measuring the concentration of sucrose solutions.The students participated in a project based learning(PBL)process,in which they worked in groups to create the instrument designed to measure the sucrose concentration in percentage by weight of sucrose in pure water solvent.Project-based learning has gained a greater position in the classroom as researchers have documented what teachers have long understood:Students become more engaged in learning when they have a chance to dig into complex and challenging problems that closely resemble real life.Moreover,several surveys have been conducted along one academic year to evaluate the impact of this method.The results of the surveys show that PBL encourages students’motivation and improves their knowledge involving the project.It is also pointed out that this methodology requires more dedication from lecturers than traditional methodology. 展开更多

This work proposes a soft sensor based on a phenomenological model for online estimation of the density and viscosity of a slurry flowing through a pipe-and-fittings assembly(PFA). The model is developed considering the conservation principle applied to mass and momentum transfer and considering frictional energy losses to include the variables directly affecting slurry properties. A reported proposal for state observers with unknown inputs is used to develop the first block of the observer structure. The second block is constructed with two options for evaluating slurry viscosity, generating two possible estimator structures, which are tested using real data. Object-based classification differentiates forest gaps from canopies at large regional scale by using remote sensing data.To study the segmentation and classification processes of object-based forest gaps classification at a regional scale,we sampled a natural secondary forest in northeast China at Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm.Airborne light detection and ranging(LiDAR;3.7 points/m^2)data were collected as the original data source and the canopy height model(CHM)and topographic dataset were extracted from the LiDAR data.The accuracy of objectbased forest gaps classification depends on previous segmentation.Thus our first step was to define 10 different scale parameters in CHM image segmentation.After image segmentation,the machine learning classification method was used to classify three kinds of object classes,namely,forest gaps,tree canopies,and others.The common support vector machine(SVM)classifier with the radial basis function kernel(RBF)was first adopted to test the effect of classification features(vegetation height features and some typical topographic features)on forest gap classification.Then the different classifiers(KNN,Bayes,decision tree,and SVM with linear kernel)were further adopted to compare the effect of classifiers on machine learning forest gaps classification.Segmentation accuracy and classification accuracy were evaluated by using Moller’s method and confusion metrics,respectively.The scale parameter had a significant effect on object-based forest gap segmentation and classification.Classification accuracies at different scales revealed that there were two optimal scales(10 and 20)that provided similar accuracy,with the scale of 10 yielding slightly greater accuracy than 20.The accuracy of the classification by using combination of height features and SVM classifier with linear kernel was 91%at the optimal scale parameter of 10,and it was highest comparing with other classification classifiers,such as SVM RBF(90%),Decision Tree(90%),Bayes(90%),or KNN(87%).The classifiers had no sig 展开更多

Several computational studies have reported of silver having almost zero turnover frequency for HDO owing to its high C\\O bond breaking energy barrier and low carbon and oxygen binding energies.Herein this work, titania supported silver catalysts were synthesized and firstly used to examine its phenol HDO activity via experimental reaction runs. BET, XRD, FESEM, TEM, EDX, ICP–OES, Pyridine-FTIR, NH3-TPD and H2-TPD analyses were done to investigate its physicochemical properties. Phenomena of hydrogen spillover and metal–acid site synergy were examined in this study. With the aid of TiO2 reducible support, hydrogen spillover and metal–acid site interactions were observed to a certain extent but were not as superior as other Pt, Pd, Ni-based catalysts used in other HDO studies. The experimental findings showed that Ag/TiO2 catalyst has mediocre phenol conversion but high benzene selectivity which confirms the explanation from other computational studies. 展开更多

In this study, several waterborne... 1,5-Pentamethylene diisocyanate, a novel aliphatic diisocyanate formed from bio-based 1,5-pentamethylenediamine, has been used as a hard segmented material to synthesize polyurethane. In this study, several waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions have been successfully prepared by a prepolymer process from 1,5-pentamethylene diisocyanate poly(polyether) with different NCO/OH ratios and 1,6-hexanediol (HDO)/dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) molar ratios. The Fourier transfonn infrared (FTIR) spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffiraction, and a mechanical tensile test were used to investigate the structures, thermal stability, phase separation, crystallinity, mechanical properties, and adhesive performance of the WPU dispersions. The FTIR results indicate that the degree of hydrogen bonding and the numbers of urea groups increase as the NCO/OH ratio and HDO/DMPA molar ratio increase. Furthermore, the phase separation increases and the thermal stability decreases as the NCO/OH ratio increases or the HDO/DMPA molar ratio decreases. Finally, WPU3.0-2.4 (NCO/OH = 3, HDO/DMPA = 2.4) exhibits a maximum tensile strength and shear strength, pointing to its possible use as an adhesive. These results could provide a very valuable reference for industrial applications of WPU. 展开更多

Achieving electromagnetic wave scattering manipulation in the multispectral and broad operation band has been a long pursuit in stealth applications. Here, we present an approach by using single-layer metasurfaces composed of space-variant amorphous silicon ridges tiled on a metallic mirror, to generate high-efficiency dual-band and ultra-wideband photonic spin-orbit interaction and geometric phase. Two scattering engineered metasurfaces have been designed to reduce specular reflection;the first one can suppress both specular reflectances at 1.05–1.08 μm and 5–12 μm below 10%. The second one is designed for an ultra-broadband of 4.6–14 μm, which is actually implemented by cleverly connecting two bands of 4.6–6.1 μm and 6.1–14 μm. Furthermore, the presented structures exhibit low thermal emission at the same time due to the low absorption loss of silicon in the infrared spectrum, which can be regarded as an achievement of laser–infrared compatible camouflage.We believe the proposed strategy may open a new route to implement multispectral electromagnetic modulation and multiphysical engineering applications. 展开更多
