BACKGROUND As one effective treatment for lateral pelvic lymph node(LPLN)metastasis(LPNM),laparoscopic LPLN dissection(LPND)is limited due to the complicated anatomy of the pelvic sidewall and various complications after surgery.With regard to improving the accuracy and completeness of LPND as well as safety,we tried an innovative method using indocyanine green(ICG)visualized with a near-infrared(NIR)camera system to guide the detection of LPLNs in patients with middle-low rectal cancer.AIM To investigate whether ICG-enhanced NIR fluorescence-guided imaging is a better technique for LPND in patients with rectal cancer.METHODS A total of 42 middle-low rectal cancer patients with clinical LPNM who underwent total mesorectal excision(TME)and LPND between October 2017 and March 2019 at our institution were assessed and divided into an ICG group and a non-ICG group.Clinical characteristics,operative outcomes,pathological outcomes,and postoperative complication information were compared and analysed between the two groups.RESULTS Compared to the non-ICG group,the ICG group had significantly lower intraoperative blood loss(55.8±37.5 mL vs 108.0±52.7 mL,P=0.003)and a significantly larger number of LPLNs harvested(11.5±5.9 vs 7.1±4.8,P=0.017).The LPLNs of two patients in the non-IVG group were residual during LPND.In addition,no significant difference was found in terms of LPND,LPNM,operative time,conversion to laparotomy,preoperative complication,or hospital stay(P>0.05).CONCLUSION ICG-enhanced NIR fluorescence-guided imaging could be a feasible and convenient technique to guide LPND because it could bring specific advantages regarding the accuracy and completeness of surgery as well as safety. 展开更多

Thus, potential biomarkers are needed to classify the disease and find new drug targets. Previous studies have shown that auto-antibodies against the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 (LRP4), called the anti-LRP4 antibodies, are found in ~23% patients of Greek and Italian ALS cohorts,[1] and in 10% of the American ALS population.[2] Anti-LRP4 antibodies were previously identified in myasthenia gravis (MG), the most common neuromuscular junction (NMJ) disorder, and were shown to cause NMJ abnormality in animal studies.[3] Here, we studied anti-LRP4 antibodies in Chinese patients and investigated the correlation between anti-LRP4 antibodies and abnormal neuromuscular transmission in ALS. 展开更多

Global increase in demand for edible plant oil along with changing climates has led to a greater need to grow oilseed rape even in wet and humid environments.To find effective measures to increase tolerance of juvenile oilseed rape to waterlogging is vitally important.A pot experiment was conducted to investigate effects of soaking seed in paclobutrazol(PBZ)solution(0(W),0.1(P1),0.3(P2)or 0.5(P3)g/L)on the growth of juvenile oilseed rape(Brassica napus L.cv.‘Zhongshuang 11’).Seed soaking with water without waterlogging was used as a control.Results showed that waterlogging decreased oilseed rape growth significantly;however,soaking seed with lower doses of PBZ(P1 and P2)significantly ameliorated the decrease in plant dry weight caused by waterlogging.Compared with W,both root dry weights and shoot dry weights of P1 and P2 treatments were significantly increased at 5 d and 10 d after waterlogging,and photosynthetic pigment contents and antioxidative enzyme activities were increased by P2 treatment at both 2 samples.Since it is labor saving and economical,soaking seed with an optimal dose(0.3 g/L)of PBZ might be an efficient way to improve waterlogging tolerance of oilseed rape. 展开更多

Protective effect of hydrogen sulfide on oxidative stress-induced neurodegenerative diseases 预览

Hydrogen sulfide is an antioxidant molecule that has a wide range of biological effects against oxidative stress. Balanced oxidative stress is also vital for maintaining cellular function in biological system, where reactive oxygen species are the main source of oxidative stress. When the normal redox balance is disturbed, deoxyribonucleic acid, lipid, and protein molecules are oxidized under pathological conditions, like diabetes mellitus that leads to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. In diabetes mellitus-induced diabetic peripheral neuropathy, due to hyperglycemia, pancreatic beta cell(β cell) shows resistance to insulin secretion. As a consequence, glucose metabolism is disturbed in neuronal cells which are distracted from providing proper cell signaling pathway. Not only diabetic peripheral neuropathy but also other central damages occur in brain neuropathy. Neurological studies regarding type 1 diabetes mellitus patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis have shown changes in the central nervous system because high blood glucose levels(HbA1 c) appeared with poor cognitive function. Oxidative stress plays a role in inhibiting insulin signaling that is necessary for brain function. Hydrogen sulfide exhibits antioxidant effects against oxidative stress, where cystathionine β synthase, cystathionine γ lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase are the endogenous sources of hydrogen sulfide. This review is to explore the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus-induced diabetic peripheral neuropathy and other neurological comorbid disorders under the oxidative stress condition and the anti-oxidative effects of hydrogen sulfide. 展开更多

A novel lateral Ge/Si avalanche photodiode without a charge region is investigated herein using device physical simulation.High field is provided by the band-gap barrier and build-in field at the Ge/Si interface in the vertical direction.Modulating the Si mesa thickness (0-0.4μm)and impurity concentration of the intrinsic Si substrate (1×10^16-4×10^16cm-3)strengthens the electric field confinement in the substrate region and provides a high avalanche multiplication in the Si region.When the Si mesa thickness is 0.3μm,and the impurity concentration of the Si substrate is 2× 10^16cm-3,the Lateral Avalanche PhotoDiode (LAPD)exhibits a peak gain of 246 under 1.55μm incident light power of -22.2dBm,which increases with decreasing light intensity. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Peroneal tendinopathies are an under-diagnosed and potentially under-treated pathology.If left untreated it can be a cause of chronic lateral hindfoot pain.Its diagnosis is challenging owing to its low incidence and vague clinical presentation.CASE SUMMARY We share a case of a patient who experienced a chronic lateral ankle pain exacerbated after alighting from a bus.This patient came to our attention only after failing conservative management on two separate occasions.Plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed rupture of the peroneus longus tendon(PLT).Findings were confirmed intra-operatively and tenodesis of the PLT to the peroneus brevis was performed.Patient was kept non-weight-bear with his foot everted and in plantarflexion before being converted to an offloading boot at two weeks.Patient was started on a progressive rehabilitation programme at six weeks and was able to return to work shortly after with excellent outcomes.CONCLUSION We aim to share our experience in managing this patient and propose some pointers guided by available literature to avoid missing this commonly overlooked pathology. 展开更多

The root system is a major determinant of a plant's access to water and nutrients.The architecture of the root system to a large extent depends on the repeated formation of new lateral roots.In this review,we discuss lateral root development from a systems biology perspective.We focus on studies combining experiments with computational modeling that have advanced our understanding of how the auxin-centered regulatory modules involved in different stages of lateral root development exert their specific functions.Moreover,we discuss how these regulatory networks may enable robust transitions from one developmental stage to the next,a subject that thus far has received limited attention.In addition,we analyze how environmental factors impinge on these modules,and the different manners in which these environmental signals are being integrated to enable coordinated developmental decision making.Finally,we provide some suggestions for extending current models of lateral root development to incorporate multiple processes and stages.Only through more comprehensive models we can fully elucidate the cooperative effects of multiple processes on later root formation,and how one stage drives the transition to the next. 展开更多

目的探讨经跗骨窦入路微创治疗跟骨骨折的临床效果。方法选取84例跟骨骨折患者为研究对象,其中接受外侧“L”形切口治疗的患者42例为对照组,另42例接受经跗骨窦入路微创治疗的患者为干预组。观察并对比两组的治疗情况、足功能评分以及... 目的探讨经跗骨窦入路微创治疗跟骨骨折的临床效果。方法选取84例跟骨骨折患者为研究对象,其中接受外侧“L”形切口治疗的患者42例为对照组,另42例接受经跗骨窦入路微创治疗的患者为干预组。观察并对比两组的治疗情况、足功能评分以及并发症发生率等指标。结果干预组手术时间、住院时间均少于对照组(P<0.05)。与术前相比,术后12个月两组患者足功能评分均明显增高,且干预组高于对照组(P<0.05)。干预组并发症发生率明显低于对照组(P<0.05)。结论 经跗骨窦入路微创治疗跟骨骨折可有效缩短手术时间、住院时间,降低并发症发生率,改善足功能,具有显著的治疗效果。 展开更多

A plant’s lateral structures, such as leaves,branches and flowers, literally hinge on the shoot axis,making its integrity and growth fundamental to plant form.In all plants, subapical proliferation within the shoot tip displaces cells downward to extrude the cylindrical stem.Following the transition to flowering, many plants show extensive axial elongation associated with increased subapical proliferation and expansion. However, the cereal grasses also elongate their stems, called culms, due to activity within detached intercalary meristems which displaces cells upward, elevating the grain-bearing inflorescence. Variation in culm length within species is especially relevant to cereal crops, as demonstrated by the high-yielding semi-dwarfed cereals of the Green Revolution. Although previously understudied, recent renewed interest the regulation of subapical and intercalary growth suggests that control of cell division planes,boundary formation and temporal dynamics of differentiation, are likely critical mechanisms coordinating axial growth and development in plants. 展开更多

Focusing on aerodynamic characteristics of rigid coaxial rotor of a high-speed helicopter in hover and forward flight, a wind tunnel test is conducted in the 8 m×6 m low-speed straightflow wind tunnel of China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center. In the experiment,a 4 m diameter composite model rigid coaxial rotor is designed and manufactured, and firstorder flapping frequency ratio of the blade is 1.796 to ensure sufficient stiffness at the blade root.Rotor aerodynamic performance is measured under hovering and high advance ratio conditions.Also, the numerical method is used to calculate aerodynamic characteristics in typical states of the rigid coaxial rotor for analysis purpose. The rotor lift-drag ratio and lateral lift offset in the experiment are emphatically analyzed for the rigid coaxial rotor. The results indicate that in forward flight condition, the rotor lift-drag ratio first increases and then decreases with the increment of advance ratio and lift offset. When advance ratio remains constant, with the increment of lift offset, the lift-drag ratio of rigid coaxial rotor first increases and then decreases. 展开更多

In the existing shearing processes for fabricating parts such as duplex gears, die roll is difficult to avoid. Accordingly, a method based on sheet-bulk metal forming for fabricating a duplex gear with extremely small die roll in one stroke is proposed in the current work. The process could be divided into three stages according to the forming features: upsetting and shearing stage, lateral extrusion stage, and local filling stage. The die roll appeared in the shearing stage, which could be reduced in the subsequent extrusion and local filling stages. To reveal the underground mechanism, material flows under two situations, as a key factor to influence the forming quality, were compared and investigated. The results revealed that by controlling material flow, one could avoid the defects and reduce the die roll. 展开更多

Continual discoveries of new genes and unraveling the genetic etiology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)have provided greater insight into the underlying pathogenesis in motor neuron degeneration,as well as facilitating the disease modeling and the testing of targeted therapeutics.While,the genetic etiology accounted for two-thirds of FALS and approximately 11% of SALS in Caucasians.However,the contributions of these causative genes to ALS vary among different populations.Furthermore,the prominent difference between Chinese population and other ethnics remains a source of ongoing debate.We systemically reviewed genetics literature of Chinese ALS populations and updated the mutation frequencies of the main ALS-implicated genes aiming to determine the genetic features of ALS in Chinese population.We also reviewed the associations between ALSimplicated single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)and the risk of ALS in Chinese population.A total of 116 studies were included in this analysis(86 gene mutation study articles and 30 SNPs study articles).The results showed that the overall gene mutation rates of ALS-related causative genes were 55.0% in familial ALS(FALS)and 11.7% in sporadic ALS(SALS)in Chinese population.In Chinese FALS,the highest mutation frequency was found in SOD1 gene(25.6%),followed by FUS(5.8%),TARDBP(5.8%),DCTN1(3.6%)and C9 orf 72(3.5%).In Chinese SALS,the highest mutation frequency was also identified in SOD1 gene(1.6%),followed by ANXA11(1.4%),FUS(1.3%),SQSTM1(1.0%),OPTN(0.9%)and CCNF(0.8%).The associations between several SNPs and risk of ALS were also reported in Chinese population.The genetic features of ALS in Chinese population are significantly different from those in Caucasian population,indicating an association between genetic susceptibility and origin of population.Further explorations are required to understand the gene complexity of ALS,including the contribution of most minor genes and the molecular mechanisms in ALS pathologies. 展开更多

The muonic component of the extensive air showers (EAS) is of great importance for the astroparticle physics. It carries the information about the properties of primary cosmic ray (CR) particles, such as their mass, and electromagnetic and hadronic nature. It provides a sensitive test for the hadronic interaction models, which are inevitable for describing the cascade shower development of cosmic rays in EAS experiments. The YangBaJing Hybrid Array (YBJ-HA) experiment has been in operation since the end of 2016. Surface detectors are used for the measurements of primary energy, angular direction and core position of a shower event, while underground muon detectors are used for measuring the density of muons at various locations. Using the data obtained by the YBJ-HA experiment,this work reports the first measurement of the lateral muon distribution for the primary cosmic ray energy in the 100TeV region. The punch-through effect is evaluated via MC simulation. 展开更多

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease involving both upper and lower neurons with no effective cure. Electrophysiological studies have found decremental responses during low-frequency repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) except for diffused neurogenic activities. However, the difference between ALS and generalized myasthenia gravis (GMG) in terms of waveform features is unclear. In the current study, we explored the variation trend of the amplitudes curve between ALS and GMG with low-frequency, positive RNS, and the possible mechanism is discussed preliminarily. Methods: A total of 85 ALS patients and 41 GMG patients were recruited. All patients were from Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) between July 1,2012 and February 28,2015. RNS study included ulnar nerve, accessory nerve and facial nerve at 3 Hz and 5 Hz stimulation. The percentage reduction in the amplitude of the fourth or fifth wave from the first wave was calculated and compared with the normal values of our hospital. A 15% decrease in amplitude is defined as a decrease in amplitude. Results: The decremental response at low-frequency RNS showed the abnormal rate of RNS decline was 54.1%(46/85) in the ALS group, and the results of different nerves were 54.1 %(46/85) of the accessory nerve, 8.2%(7/85) of the ulnar nerve and 0%(0/85) of the facial nerve stimulation, respectively. In the GMG group, the abnormal rate of RNS decline was 100%(41/41) at low-frequency RNS of accessory nerves. However, there was a significant difference between the 2 groups in the amplitude after the sixth wave. Conclusions: Both groups of patients are able to show a decreasing amplitude of low-frequency stimulation RNS, but the recovery trend after the sixth wave has significant variation. It implies the different pathogenesis of NMJ dysfunction of these 2 diseases. 展开更多

Mitophagy is activated by a number of stimuli,including hypoxia,energy stress,and increased oxidative phosphorylation activity.Mitophagy is associated with oxidative stress conditions and central neurodegenerative diseases.Proper regulation of mitophagy is crucial for maintaining homeostasis;conversely,inadequate removal of mitochondria through mitophagy leads to the generation of oxidative species,including reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species,resulting in various neurodegenerative diseases,such as Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.These diseases are most prevalent in older adults whose bodies fail to maintain proper mitophagic functions to combat oxidative species.As mitophagy is essential for normal body function,by targeting mitophagic pathways we can improve these disease conditions.The search for effective remedies to treat these disease conditions is an ongoing process,which is why more studies are needed.Additionally,more relevant studies could help establish therapeutic conditions,which are currently in high demand.In this review,we discuss how mitophagy plays a significant role in homeostasis and how its dysregulation causes neurodegeneration.We also discuss how combating oxidative species and targeting mitophagy can help treat these neurodegenerative diseases. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Novel strategies are needed for improving guided bone regeneration (GBR) in oral surgery prior to implant placement, particularly in maxillary sinus augmentation (GBR-MSA) and in lateral alveolar ridge augmentation (LRA). This study tested the hypothesis that the combination of freshly isolated, unmodified autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells (UA-ADRCs), fraction 2 of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF-2) and an osteoinductive scaffold (OIS)(UAADRC/ PRGF-2/OIS) is superior to the combination of PRGF-2 and the same OIS alone (PRGF-2/OIS) in GBR-MSA/LRA. CASE SUMMARY A 79-year-old patient was treated with a bilateral external sinus lift procedure as well as a bilateral lateral alveolar ridge augmentation. GBR-MSA/LRA was performed with UA-ADRC/PRGF-2/OIS on the right side, and with PRGF2/OIS on the left side. Biopsies were collected at 6 wk and 34 wk after GBRMSA/ LRA. At the latter time point implants were placed. Radiographs (32 mo follow-up time) demonstrated excellent bone healing. No radiological or histological signs of inflammation were observed. Detailed histologic, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analysis of the biopsies evidenced that UA-ADRC/PRGF-2/OIS resulted in better and faster bone regeneration than PRGF-2/OIS. CONCLUSION GBR-MSA with UA-ADRCs, PRGF-2, and an OIS shows effectiveness without adverse effects. 展开更多

Background:It is important to determine prognostic factors for the outcome of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at an early stage.The time taken for symptoms to spread from spinal or bulbar regions to both (time to generalization;TTG) is considered a strong predictor of survival;however,this has rarely been studied in Asian populations.The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate potential factors affecting prognosis in Chinese patients with sporadic ALS,with a focus on the association between TTG and overall survival.Methods:Seventy-one patients with sporadic ALS who were hospitalized at Chinese PLA General Hospital from 2009 to 2016 were followed up until December 2017.Survival analysis was performed using univariate Kaplan-Meier log-rank and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models.The clinical data of the patients were recorded and analyzed.Variables studied were age at symptom onset,sex,site of symptom onset,diagnostic latency,TTG,diagnostic category,ALS Functional Rating Scale-revised score,percent predicted forced vital capacity (FVC%),and disease progression rate (DPR) at diagnosis.Results:The mean age at onset was 54 (SD = 10.2) years,and the median survival time from symptom onset was 41 months (95% confidence interval:34–47).By univariate analysis,factors independently affecting survival were age at symptom onset (Log rank = 15.652,P<0.0001),TTG (Log rank = 14.728,P<0.0001),diagnostic latency (Log rank = 11.997,P = 0.001),and DPR (Log rank = 6.50,P = 0.011).In the Cox multivariate model,TTG had the strongest impact on survival time (hazard ratio = 0.926,P = 0.01).Conclusions:TTG can be used as an effective indicator of prognosis in patients with sporadic ALS. 展开更多

Fungi are important infectious disease-causing agents,but are often overlooked as environmental factors in disease.We review several lines of evidence that point to a potential fungal origin of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS),the most common form of motor neurone disease.Approximately 90%cases of ALS are sporadic,and the aetiology of sporadic ALS is still unknown.We have previously postulated that grass or soil-associated fungal infections may be a leading cause of sporadic ALS.Herein we extend this proposal to water-associated fungi.A wide variety of fungi have been reported in drinking water including Acremonium,Alternaria,Aspergillus,Cladosporium,Fusarium,Penicillium and Trichoderma.Some of these are known to produce neurotoxic mycotoxins.Despite this,drinking water is not routinely monitored for fungal contamination.Fungal contamination could explain the close correlation between distribution of well water and cases of sporadic ALS in the United States.We propose several mechanisms by which an opportunistic fungal infection from environmental exposure(to water,soil or plants)can lead to long term neuronal degradation resulting in the hallmarks of ALS.If confirmed,the association between fungal infection and sporadic ALS could lead to novel treatment strategies for this progressive and fatal disease. 展开更多

Rectal cancer constitutes a major public health issue.Total mesorectal excision has remained the gold standard treatment for mid and low rectal tumors since its introduction in the late 1980s.Removal of all lymph nodes located in the mesorectum has indeed improved pathological and oncological outcomes.However,when cancer spreads to the lateral lymph nodes(located along the iliac and obturator arteries)Western and Japanese practices differ.Where the Western guidelines consider this condition as an advanced form of the disease and use neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy liberally,the Japanese guidelines define it as a local disease and proceed to lateral lymph node dissection with or without neoadjuvant treatment.Herein,we review the current literature regarding both therapeutic strategies,with the aim of contributing to potential improvements in treatment and outcome for patients with low and mid rectal cancer. 展开更多

A new analytical method for calculating the static lateral pressure is introduced to obtain mor accurate calculation method of the lateral pressure of end wall and side wall of heavy haul wagon. In the method the influence of mechanical characteristics of the end wall is considered. For the end wall, a basis for lightweigh design can be provided by deducing an analytical method of the lateral pressure which is closer to the experimenta results. For the side wall, calculation formula which takes the cycloid curve as projection of rupture surface i derived. The correctness of the formula is verified by comparison with the experimental results. The nonlinea distribution of lateral pressure along the height direction is achieved. Further research is done on the relationship between key parameters of the heavy haul wagon design and the lateral pressure on the side wall. 展开更多
