In this study, the researchers categorized the different maritime command-language (words and expressions) used on-board by young Filipino officers and seafarers employed at the different foreign shipping companies in the country and abroad. The paper also ascertained the importance of maritime language in the global seafaring profession of maritime youth in the Philippines. The respondents of the present study were the young officers and seafarers of the maritime university, specifically, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines. Quantitative and qualitative mode of data collection was employed by the researchers. A researcher-made data gathering instrument was used to capture the necessary data in understanding the role of maritime language in the global seafaring profession. Sample utterances were gathered from the respondents and were subject to corresponding statistical interpretation. Qualitative information, comments, and remarks were utilized in this study to showcase the importance of maritime language in the profession of young officers and seafarers as graduates of leading global supplier in the international maritime industry. 展开更多

This paper presents the importance and the effects of training Electro-Technical Experts in the context of latest developments, particularly the advent of the “Electric Ship” and the “Communicative Ship” analyzing the feedback received from several relevant two-days seminars for “Ship Electrical and Electronic Systems for Electro-Technical Officers”, in North East European countries. The pre-test and post-test self assessment method that has been used for more efficient interaction between trainers and trainees is analyzed using t-statistics. The attendees have had diverse basic backgrounds, yet company experts Fleet Engineers on merchant or war ships. The training’s effectiveness and gain is discussed in this paper and further proposals for the Electrical and Electronic training are presented through the valuable feedback for improvement. 展开更多

Global ports and maritime shipping networks are important carriers for global supply chain networks, but they are also the main sources of energy consumption and pollution. To limit ship emissions in ports and offshore areas, the International Maritime Organization, as well as some countries, has issued a series of policies. This study highlights the importance and necessity of investigating emergent research problems in the operation management of green ports and maritime shipping networks. Considerable literature related to this topic is reviewed and discussed. Moreover, a comprehensive research framework on green port and shipping operation management is proposed for future research opportunities. The framework mainly comprises four research areas related to emission control and grading policies. This review may provide new ideas to the academia and industry practitioners for improving the performance and efficiency of the operation management of green ports and maritime shipping networks. 展开更多

This article examines the efforts of two county instructors(jiaoyLi),Xie Jinluan and Zheng Jiancai,to bolster the security of the maritime frontier and stabilize local society in early 19th century Fujian and Taiwan.Occurring during the Jiaqing transition in which Chinese elites increasingly voiced concerns about problems afflicting the empire,Xie and Zheng waged an information campaign to lobby for local issues while embedded in county educational posts.Printing their treatises through their alma mater,the Aofeng Academy,Fuzhou's premier educational inst让ution that promoted a rigorous Neo-Confucian scholarly orientation,and using well-positioned Aofeng alumni to take their causes to Beijing,the instructors were able to make changes on the local level and provide Qing officials with a new source of "expert" local information that bypassed the regular bureaucracy.By producing information on themes of local governance and manipulating the elite network of the Aofeng Academy that connected Fujian to circles of power in Beijing,Xie and Zheng became models of local political action,influencing new generations of Fujianese scholars over the 19th century. 展开更多

This study presents the structural characteristics and regeneration potential of mangrove patches in the estuarine and coastal areas of Kerala,a tropical maritime state in India.Field surveys were carried out at 46 selected sites during August 2015 to May 2016.In each site,the vegetative structure and regeneration status were assessed using the quadrat method.Altogether 219 quadrates were laid out and a total of 13 true mangrove species,belonging to 5 families and 8 genera,were recorded.The total tree density and stand basal area of the study region was 1678.08/ha and 20.33 m^2/ha respectively.The low basal areas indicate the reduced structural development in mangroves.Of the 13 tree species,Avicennia constitutes 56%of the total Important Value Index(IVI)and Avicennia officinalis represents 41%of the IVI in Kerala,followed by Avicennia marina(15%),Rhizophora mucronata(15%),Sonneratia alba(8%)Rhizophora apiculata(7%)and Excoecaria agallocha(7%).The diameter at breast height(DBH)in the study area revealed that 47%of the tree species came under the 1–10 cm DBH class.Total sapling and seedling density in Kerala was 2238.35 and 3232.42 individuals/ha respectively.Density of young plants(seedlings+saplings)was only 31%greater of tree density and varied from 3–63%,which indicates poor regeneration potential.The Maturity index value(MIV)and complexity index(Ic)value of mangroves were 18.30 and 109.81 respectively.However,the low Ic value(<10)observed in seven out of ten coastal districts indicated poor structural development of mangroves in Kerala.Therefore,locationspecific conservation and management measures,guided by the knowledge on spatial distribution and habitat requirements of mangrove varieties should be taken to preserve the mangrove diversity of Kerala. 展开更多

INTERDECADAL CHANGE OF DIABATIC FORCING OVER KEY REGION OF THE MARITIME CONTINENT AND ITS POSSIBLE RELATIONS WITH THE EAST ASIAN SUMMER MONSOON ANOMALIES

The Maritime Continent(MC) is an important region where the Tropical Pacific and the Indian Ocean interact with each other via 'the atmospheric bridge' and a key region for the interaction between the Asian and Australian monsoons. Using the NCEP/NCAR and CMAP monthly mean reanalysis over the period of 1979-2012, the interdecadal variations of diabatic forcing over the key region of the Maritime Continent and its possible relations with the East Asian summer monsoon have been investigated in the present paper. Our results show that climate variations in the Maritime Continent is particularly significant in the area of 95-145°E, 10°S-10°N, which is thus defined as the key area of the MC(i.e., KMC area). Without the input of latent heat release in the atmosphere, distinct interdecadal change of diabatic heating is found to exist from 1979 to 2012;it intensified before 1980 s and peaked in the late 1980 s and weakened after this period. By analyzing each individual component that contributes to the diabatic heating in the KMC area, surface latent heat flux and net long-wave radiation in the atmosphere are found to be the two dominant components. With negative diabatic heating anomalies over KMC, there will be more precipitation on islands and less precipitation over sea, and more rainfall around the equator, which is in correspondence with the convergence center around the equator in the KMC area. Along the meridional-vertical section averaged between 115-120 ° E, the well-defined vertical circulation anomalies are observed with the ascending branches over KMC and the area around 30°N respectively, and the descending branch over the South China Sea. Water vapor transports from the Bay of Bengal and South China Sea to eastern China to benefit the positive precipitation anomalies. The meridional-vertical circulation in East Asia plays a critical role in linking the interdecadal variability of diabatic heating over the KMC and East Asian summer monsoon anomalies. 展开更多

As of 2020,shipping companies will have to use low-sulphur fuels to comply with current international regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL Agreement(regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships),which will limit the maximum sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.5%.It is against this backdrop that natural gas(LNG)is being considered as one of the primary alternative fuels to enable compliance with this international regulation.Currently,there are 103 LNG-fuelled vessels in operation around the world and 97 on order.Car and passenger vessels make up the largest segment,accounting for 40 of the 103;none of these,however,is a high-speed(HSC)ropax vessel with capacity for both passengers and trucksi n open seas.HSC vessels are deployed in niche markets requiring high-speed propulsion engines(around 1,000 rpm)that can maintain service speeds.Existing LNG dual-fuel engines cannot be used to retrofit HSC vessels as they have been developed from a range of medium-speed engines(around 500-700 rpm)and they are heavier than those high-speed engines traditionally used by the HSC industry.This paper presents the innovative technology developed for the world’s first adaptation of a high-speed engine to LNG dual-fuel use by the shipping company Fred.Olsen S.A.,within the GAINN4SHIP INNOVATION project. 展开更多

ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EGP (English for General Purposes) teaching in maritime vocational colleges are new varieties of English teaching in this age. Hence, this research aims to explore an appropriate design of the bridging course content for maritime majors at vocational college by carrying out an empirical experiment. To test the effectiveness of the bridging course design, the pre-experiment and the postexperiment were done on 49 frst-year maritime majors in Jiangsu Maritime Institute by adopting the bridging course. The results of the experiment data revealed that before the experiment was conducted, there was not much difference in the English level between the experimental class and the control class. However, after the experiment, it was found that the bridging course had a positive influence on the English academic achievement of the experimental class, which was superior to that of the control class. Finally, designing a bridging course between College English and Maritime English can covered the following three perspectives: choosing language content, compiling suitable ESP materials and teaching the bridging course on the basis of Needs Analysis. All mentioned above by the author were effective in enhancing students’ awareness of ESP study and College English study efciency but needed to be further explored. 展开更多

In this paper,we discuss the environmental damages caused by the use and carriage of Heavy Fuel Oil(HFO)by ships in Arctic waters.We also review efforts made by major international and regional organizations in governing the use and carriage of HFO by ships in Arctic waters after implementation of the Polar Code,and analyze the obstacles and difficulties that lie ahead.By illustrating the features of the Arctic Council and the International Maritime Organization(IMO),which govern Arctic waters,we examine measures taken by these two organizations in tackling HFO issues.These include:assessing indigenous and local community’s reliance on HFO transportation in the Arctic,developing risk prevention measures for ships operating in Arctic waters,seeking economic alternatives to HFO that contribute to a greener economy,developing a package of HFO governance measures,strengthening cooperation between relevant international and regional organizations that govern HFO to provide suggestions for follow-up discussions on HFOs,and optimize governance by relevant organizations and determine a better global solution to governing the use and carriage of HFO by ships.In addition,we discuss the feasibility of an IMO-imposed HFO ban from the perspective of the Arctic governance to clearly grasp the path of its future development. 展开更多
