A 68-year-old lady sustained an ipsilateral fracture... Simultaneous ipsilateral fractures involving radial head and distal end of radius are uncommon. We present our thoughts on which fracture should be addressed first. A 68-year-old lady sustained an ipsilateral fracture of the right radial head and distal end of radius following a fall. Clinically her right elbow was posteriorly dislocated and right wrist was deformed. Plain radiographs showed an intraarticular fracture of the distal end of radius and a comminution radial head fracture with a proximally migrated radius. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed no significant ligament injuries. We addressed her distal radius first with an an atomical lock ing plate followed by her radial head with a radial head replacement. Our rationale to treat the distal end radius: first was to obtain a correct alignment of Lister's tubercle and correct the distal radius height. Lister's tubercle was used to guide for the correct rotation of the radial head prosthesis. Correcting the distal end fracture radial height helped us with length selection of the radial head prosthesis and address the proximally migrated radial shaft and neck. Postoperative radiographs showed an acceptable reduction. The Cooney score was 75 at 3 months postoperatively, which was equivalent to a fair functional outcome. 展开更多

Improved vocal effort modeling by exploiting echo state network and radial basis function network

The independent hypothesis between frames in vocal effect(VE) recognition makes it difficult for frame based spectral features to describe the intrinsic temporal correlation and dynamic change information in speech phenomena. A novel VE detection method based on echo state network(ESN) is proposed. The input sequences are mapped into a fixed-dimensionality vector in high dimensional coding space by reservoir of the ESN. Then, radial basis function(RBF) networks are employed to fit the probability density function(pdf) of each VE mode by using the vectors in the high dimensional coding space. Finally, the minimum error rate Bayesian decision is employed to judge the VE mode. The experiments which are conducted on isolated words test set achieve 79.5% average recognition accuracy, and the results show that the proposed method can overcome the defect of the independent hypothesis between frames effectively. 展开更多

Heterogeneous tide-surge interaction during co-occurrence of tropical and extratropical cyclones in the radial sand ridges of the southern Yellow Sea 预览

The Radial Sand Ridges(RSRs)area in the southern Yellow Sea are subject to tropical and extratropical cyclone activities frequently,in which the special geometry feature and moving stationary tidal system result in complex storm-induced hydrodynamic processes,especially the tide-surge interactions.We studied a rare weather event influenced simultaneously by an extratropical cyclone EX1410 and Typhoon Vongfong as an example to investigate the characteristics of storm surges,wave-surge,and tide-surge interaction in the RSRs area,and applied a high-resolution integrally-coupled ADCIRC+SWAN model,in which the meteorological forcing inputs are simulated by the WRF-ARW model.The model is validated by records from 4 tide gauges and 2 wave buoys along the Yellow Sea coast.Results show that the tide-surge interactions are of considerable regional heterogeneousness.The surge curves at Lüsi(in south RSRs)and Jianggang(in middle RSRs)have abrupt falls near the time of low tide,where the peak occurrence time of interaction residuals tend to shift towards the mid-ebb period.Significant increase of bed shear stress in shallow waters was proved the dominant factor to affect the tide-surge interaction in broad tidal flats of the RSRs area.Differently,the interaction pattern in the Xiyang Trough(in north RSRs),showed a unique rising in mid-flood period due to the phase advances of real surge waves in relatively deep waters.Therefore,we suggested to the local flood risk management that the tide-surge interaction tends to alleviate the flooding risk in the RSRs area around the time of high tide,but aggravate the risk on the rising tide in the Xiyang Trough and on the falling tide in large-scale tidal flats of the southem RSRs area. 展开更多

Methods From April 2016 to December 2018, 28 patients with posterior elbow skin and soft tissue defect with exposed bone and tendon were treated in our hospital. the radial collateral artery perforator flap was used to repair the wound. There were 19 cases of skin defect with ulna exposure after electric shock injury, 5 cases of hot compression injury and 4 cases of bone exposure caused by skin contusion after traffic accident. Results There is no complication after the operation, all the flaps were survived. The flaps had good quality and satisfactory recovery of appearance and function. Conclusion The lateral upper arm flap designed by perforating branch of radial collateral artery is an effective method for posterior elbow skin and soft tissue defect because of its constant anatomic position and long vascular pedicle. 展开更多

Flagellum in sperm is composed of over 200 different proteins and is essential for sperm motility. In particular, defects in the assembly of the radial spoke in the flagellum result in male infertility due to loss of sperm motility. However, mechanisms regulating radial spoke assembly remain unclear in metazoans.Here, we identified a novel Drosophila protein radial spoke binding protein 15(RSBP15) which plays an important role in regulating radial spoke assembly. Loss of RSBP15 results in complete lack of mature sperms in seminal vesicles(SVs), asynchronous individualization complex(IC) and defective "9 + 2"structure in flagella. RSBP15 is colocalized with dRSPH3 in sperm flagella, and interacts with dRSPH3 through its DD_R_PKA superfamily domain which is important for the stabilization of dRSPH3. Moreover,loss of dRSPH3, as well as dRSPH1, dRSPH4 a and dRSPH9, showed similar phenotypes to rsbp15 KO mutant. Together, our results suggest that RSBP15 acts in stabilizing the radial spoke protein complex to anchor and strengthen the radial spoke structures in sperm flagella. 展开更多

Abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA) is one of the most common and catastrophic manifestations of the acute aortic syndrome that can be treated with endovascular aneurysm repair(EVAR) which requires a specially designed stent-graft system.In this work, a self-expanding nickel–titanium(nitinol) stent-graft system is aiming at AAA using finite element analysis(FEA) methods to analyze both fatigue behaviors and radial forces.Based on the systematic analysis of the parametric variations, a final stent-graft system was developed by the selection and arrangement of the individual stent components, targeting an optimal performance for the treatment of AAA.Experimental tests, animal tests and clinical trials were carried out to confirm the results.Both animal trials and clinical trials showed comparable curative effects with Medtronic Endurant stent-graft(SG) systems. 展开更多

Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC)vehicles are considered to have broad prospects for development,and the high operating temperature of SOFC results in great potential for waste-heat recovery.Many concepts for utilizing waste heat of SOFC have been suggested and studied,and most of them directly couple an SOFC to a gas turbine,which require the SOFC to operate at an elevated pressure and make the system less flexible and thus harder to operate.In recent years,with the development of turbine and heat exchanger technology,the supercritical carbon dioxide(S-CO2)power cycle has raised widespread attractions for the waste recovery.This study explores the potential of S-CO2 Brayton cycle to realize waste-heat recovery for an SOFC vehicle.The SOFC can operate at atmospheric pressure,and the hybrid system is easier to operate than the directly coupled systems.In this paper,a simple recuperated S-CO2 Brayton cycle is proposed and the key component,radial inflow turbine is designed and focused.The flow state of the designed turbine is analyzed in detail based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD)numerical simulation.Five cases with different impeller tip clearances are numerically simulated to study its influence on the turbine performance.In addition,off-design performance analysis of the radial inflow turbine is conducted considering the temperature fluctuation of SOFC in practical applications. 展开更多

It is quite common for fill slopes such as embankments and airport foundations to be constructed in mountainous areas.Steep fill–rock interfaces in such areas undergo tensile failure owing to differences in the stiffness values and tensile strengths of the soil and hard rock.In this study,a new anchor system,termed“radial cable,”is proposed to increase the pullout capacity of cables in the fill;this in turn helps control tensile deformation in the fill slope along the interface.In a radial cable,the steel ropes of a conventional cable are equally and symmetrically separated into three sub-cables(a central sub-cable and two branch sub-cables)with a radial distribution starting from the position of the interface.Moreover,each of the sub-cables is fixed in the fill using short U-shaped rigid rods along the cable length and a rigid baffle at its end to further increase pullout resistance.Experimental and numerical uplift tests were conducted to analyze the pullout capacity and anchoring behavior of the radial cables in soil to study the effect of branching.The reinforcement effect of the radial cables was also examined using a case study. 展开更多

The radial basis function(RBF) approach is a powerful tool to improve nuclear mass predictions. By combining the RBF approach with the latest relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov(RCHB) model, the local systematic deviations between the RCHB mass predictions and the experimental data are eliminated, and the root-meansquare(rms) mass deviation is significantly reduced from 7.923 MeV to 0.386 MeV. However, systematic deviations between the RBF improved mass predictions and the experimental data remain for nuclei with four different odd-even parities, i.e.(even Z, even N),(even Z, odd N),(odd Z, even N), and(odd Z, odd N). They can be reduced by separately training RBF for the four groups of nuclei, and the resulting rms deviation decreases to 0.229 MeV. It is found that the RBF approach can describe the deformation effects neglected in the present RCHB mass calculations, and also improves the description of the shell effect and the pairing effect. 展开更多

The diameter of the impeller balance hole in a centrifugal pump is closely related to axial force.Thus,to select the appropriate diameter of a balance hole is crucial for balancing the axial force of the centrifugal pump.After the validation of the CFD method and the grids independence study,the characteristics of flow in the hub cavity have been analyzed in 4 cases with different diameters of balance holes.The leakage rate of the liquid in the hub cavity of the centrifugal pump is calculated and compared with the test result.According to the research,when no balance hole exists,the distribution of liquid velocity in the core area of the hub cavity exhibits axial symmetry,and the circumferential velocity component is approximately 0.4 times of the impeller's rotational speed.When the balance hole exists,the distribution of liquid velocity in the hub cavity does not exhibit axial symmetry,and the circumferential velocity component is larger than 0.4 times of the impeller's rotational speed.The radial leakage velocity on the turbulent boundary layer of the pump cover will increase with the increasing diameter of the balance hole. 展开更多

This paper proposes a new method for data assimilation of the surface radial current observed by High Frequency ground wave radar and optimization of the bottom friction coefficient.In this method,the shallow water wave equation is introduced into the cost function of the multigrid three-dimensional variation data assimilation method as the weak constraint term,the surface current and the bottom friction coefficient are defined as the analytical variables,and the high spatiotemporal resolution surface radial flow observed by the high-frequency ground wave radar is used to optimize the surface current and bottom friction coefficient.This method can effectively consider the spatiotemporal correlation of radar data and extract multiscale information from surface radial flow data from long waves to short waves.Introducing the shallow water wave equation into the cost function as a weak constraint condition can adjust both the momentum and mass fields simultaneously to obtain more reasonable analysis information.The optimized bottom friction coefficient is introduced into the regional ocean numerical model to carry out numerical experiments.The test results show that the bottom friction coefficient obtained by this method can effectively improve the accuracy of the numerical simulation of sea surface height in the offshore area and reduce the simulation error. 展开更多

Zr-based Zr50Pd40Al10 metallic glasses has not only crystalline phases of about 5 nm in diameter but also amorphous phases. In this work, the radial distribution functions(RDFs) of amorphous structure of Zr50Pd40Al10 metallic glasses were firstly measured by electron diffraction, and then Reverse Monte Carlo(RMC) optimization accompanied by density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The amorphous structure has not only short-range order but also good medium-range order. In the RDFs of its amorphous structure, the first and the second peaks are located at 2.96 ? and 4.79 ?, respectively. Partial radical distribution functions(PRDFs) show that the contributions of the first and the second nearest-neighbor distances of various atom pairs to the G(r) peak values, and the first nearest-neighbor distances of Pd–Zr and Zr–Zr atom pairs are the sources of main G(r) peak values between 2? and 6?. The competition mechanism for generating the Pd25Zr55 Al20 amorphous phase and the intermetallic crystalline phase Pd11Zr9 is associated with the differences of atomic radius, the proportion, and the melting point of different atoms, as well as the heat of mixing between atoms, leading to an equilibrium state of the two phases. Accordingly, a composite system with intertwined nanocrystals and amorphous phases is in turn formed, and improves the stability of the material. 展开更多

This paper numerically studies the aerodynamic performance of a bird-like bionic flapping wing.The geometry and kinematics are designed based on a seagull wing,in which flapping,folding,swaying,and twisting are considered.An in-house unsteady flow solver based on hybrid moving grids.is adopted for unsteady flow simulations.We focus on two main issues in this study,i.e.,the influence of the proportion of down-stroke and the effect of span-wise twisting.Numerical results show that the proportion of downstroke is closely related to the efficiency of the flapping process.The preferable proportion is about 0.7 by using the present geometry and kinematic model,which is very close to the observed data.Another finding is that the drag and the power consumption can be greatly reduced by the proper span-wise twisting.Two cases with different reduced frequencies are simulated and compared with each other.The numerical results show that the power consumption reduces by more than 20%,and the drag coefficient reduces by more than 60% through a proper twisting motion for both cases.The flow mechanism is mainly due to controlling of unsteady flow separation by adjusting the local effective angle of attack.These conclusions will be helpful for the high-performance micro air vehicle (MAV) design. 展开更多

Background: Immune protection in newborn calves relies on a combination of the timing,volume and quality of colostrum consumed by the calf after birth.Poor quality colostrum with inadequate immunoglobulin concentration contributes to failed transfer of passive immunity in calves,leading to higher calf morbidity and mortality.Therefore,estimating colostrum quality and ensuring the transfer of passive immunity on farm is of critical importance.Currently,there are no on-farm tools that directly measure immunoglobulin content in colostrum or serum.The aim of this study was to apply a novel molecular assay,split trehalase immunoglobulin G assay(STIGA),to directly estimate immunoglobulin content in dairy and beef colostrum and calf sera,and to examine its potential to be developed as on-farm test.The STIGA is based on a split version of trehalase TreA,an enzyme that converts trehalose into glucose,enabling the use of a common glucometer for signal detection.In a first study,60 dairy and64 beef colostrum and 83 dairy and 84 beef calf sera samples were tested with STIGA,and the resulting glucose production was measured and compared with radial immunodiffusion,the standard method for measuring immunoglobulin concentrations.Results: Pearson correlation coefficients between the methods were determined and the sensitivity,specificity,and accuracy of the test were calculated for different colostrum quality and failed transfer of passive immunity cut-off points.The correlations of the STIGA measured by colorimetric enzymatic reaction compared to radial immunodiffusion for dairy and beef colostrum were 0.72 and 0.73,respectively,whereas the correlations for dairy and beef sera were 0.9 and 0.85,respectively.Next,STIGA was tested in a blinded study with fresh colostrum and serum samples where the correlation coefficient was 0.93 and 0.94,respectively.Furthermore,the performance of STIGA followed by glucometer readings resulted in correlations with radial immunodiffusion of 0.7 and 0.85 for dairy and beef colostrum and 0.94 and 0 展开更多

The design of axial or radial swirlers typically governs a number of geometrical parameters that are determined by the desired flow field.In the meantime,the number of unknown parameters increases with the number of concentrically mounted swirlers.The available literature is nonetheless limited,and designers are obligated to increase the number of initial assumptions.In this article,three kinds of triple swirlers are employed and simulations are performed to determine the effect of each parameter on the swirler performance.Based on the correlation provided,overlengthening the radial vane length could result in significant changes in the flow field from the jetlike pattern to a wide swirl-jet angle due to the Coanda effect.Passage width should also have the potential to alter the swirl-jet angle and velocity field at the exit of the swirler. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Joint stiffness after elbow surgery is not a rare complication,and is always accompanied by deformity.The causes of joint stiffness are multiple in different patients,and divided into intrinsic and extrinsic causes.Herein,we report an unusual case of posttraumatic elbow stiffness due to multiple and rare causes.CASE SUMMARY A 19-year-old male was hospitalized with the loss of motion of the left elbow for over ten years.Left limb computed tomography revealed left elbow stiffness with bony block and connection.The patient underwent surgery,and the etiology of joint stiffness was found to be a rare combination of common and uncommon causes.During an 18-mo follow-up period,the patient’s left elbow had normal motion and he was symptom-free.CONCLUSION However,this case combined with multiple and rare causes highlights that the patient with scar physique is likely to be accompanied with more severe soft tissue,nerve contracture,and heterotypic ossification,even during recurrence. 展开更多

In this paper, we study radial operators in Toeplitz algebra on the weighted Bergman spaces over the polydisk by the(m, λ)-Berezin transform and find that a radial operator can be approximated in norm by Toeplitz operators without any conditions. We prove that the compactness of a radial operator is equivalent to the property of vanishing of its(0, λ)-Berezin transform on the boundary. In addition, we show that an operator S is radial if and only if its(m, λ)-Berezin transform is a separately radial function. 展开更多
