To determine whether ultrasound features can improve the diagnostic performance of tumor markers in distinguishing ovarian tumors,we enrolled 719 patients diagnosed as having ovarian tumors at Nanfang Hospital from September 2014 to November 2016.Age,menopausal status,histopathology,the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics(FIGO)stages,tumor biomarker levels,and detailed ultrasound reports of patients were collected.The area under the curve(AUC),sensitivity,and specificity of the bellow-mentioned predictors were analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve.Of the 719 patients,531 had benign lesions,119 had epithelial ovarian cancers(EOC),44 had borderline ovarian tumors(BOT),and 25 had non-EOC.AUCs and the sensitivity of cancer antigen 125(CAI25),human epididymis-specific protein 4(HE4),Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm(ROMA),Risk of Malignancy Index(RMI1),HE4 model,and Rajavithi-Ovarian Cancer Predictive Score(R-OPS)in the overall population were 0.792,0.854,0.856,0.872,0.893,0.852,and 70.2%,56.9%,69.1%,60.6%,77.1%,71.3%,respectively.For distinguishing EOC from benign tumors,the AUCs and sensitivity of the above mentioned predictors were 0.888,0.946,0.947,0.949,0.967,0.966,and 84.0%,79.8%,87.4%,84.9%,90.8%,89.1%,respectively.Their specificity in predicting benign diseases was 72.9%,94.4%,87.6%,95.9%,86.3%,90.8%,respectively.Therefore,we consider biomarkers in combination with ultrasound features may improve the diagnostic performance in distinguishing malignant from benign ovarian tumors. 展开更多

Risk Transfer for Populations in Precarious Urban Environments 认领

This study explores risk transfer options that precarious and marginal urban communities could use to protect themselves from future damages and losses generated by socio-natural hazards and disasters at the individual and community levels. The design is framed within an evidence-based disaster risk reduction(DRR) strategy and follows the case study research approach. We analyze the2018 Neighborhood Approach for DRR programming evaluation carried out in four Latin American cities’ informal settlements and review relevant risk transfer experiences aimed at vulnerable populations. We calculate the pure risk premium for the four cases selected, using a previous catastrophe risk assessment for earthquakes and landslides. We propose three risk transfer options based on our analysis:(1) voluntary collective insurance;(2) structural reinforcement with a comprehensive housing insurance;and(3) hybrid parametric insurance. Risk transfer mechanisms conventionally focus on residual risk management. Here, due to the precariousness of the analyzed urban settings, the proposed alternatives go beyond the management of just residual risk to positively impact the beneficiaries’ quality of life and the reduction of the built environment’s physical vulnerability in the short and medium terms. Our study proposes a prospective estimation of future risk despite the limitations of data availability. This study opens a window to new approaches and proposes a systematic process to design DRR policy aimed at the poor and vulnerable strata of society. 展开更多

Heavy metal(HM)pollution in sediment is a serious concern particularly in developing nations,warranting an extensive survey to understand the current situation and propose possible remedial measures.This paper compiles the data of HMs cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),cobalt(Co),manganese(Mn),arsenic(As),lead(Pb),chromium(Cr),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn)and nickel(Ni)in aquatic sediment from India from 1979 to 2017.It was found that mean values of Cu,Co,Zn,Pb,As,and Cr in Indian sediment were high in comparison to the Australian Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines,World Surface Rock Average,and the Threshold Effect Level for freshwater ecosystems.Anthropogenic activities,lithogenic factors,and sand intrusion are the main factors associated with HM pollution as observed using cluster analysis and principal component analysis.The results of contamination indices indicate that HM contamination ranged from average to high,in the sediment.The ecological risk assessment results showed that 11%HMs present very high risk.The cancer risk,due to the high contents of Cd,As,and Cr the ingestion pathway,showed high risk of cancer through food/water contaminated with sediment.At source reduction of HMs in industrial effluents by effluent treatment plants,and plantation of phytoremediating rooted macrophytes in sediment may help in HM mitigation of the sediment. 展开更多

Mine closure is associated with many negative impacts on society and the environment.If these effects are not rationally addressed,they would pose risks of mine closure.Thus,a risk management method is needed to mitigate these adverse impacts and address mine-closure issues.An integral framework for mine-closure risk management that includes risk assessment and risk treatment was proposed.Given the fuzziness and randomness of the transformation between qualitative and quantitative knowledge in the risk assessment process,a novel risk assessment method based on the cloud model was presented,which fully considers the uncertainty in risks themselves and in the reasoning process.Closed mine reutilization is an effective risk treatment option in response to the identified high risks,but it requires selecting optimal reutilization strategies for the successful implementation of the reuse plan.To this end,a hybrid semi-quantitative decision method is proposed to optimize decision-making.The results of a case study showed that this risk management methodology can help budget planning for risk treatment and provide an instructional framework to effectively reduce the negative effects of closed mines. 展开更多

ldentifying risks and prioritizing is important for payment service provider(PSP)companies to get banking projects and gain more market share.However,studies regarding the identification of risks and causal relationsh... ldentifying risks and prioritizing is important for payment service provider(PSP)companies to get banking projects and gain more market share.However,studies regarding the identification of risks and causal relationships are insufficient in the lranian PSP industry and the industry is unique because of its characteristics.In this study,30 experts involved with PSP companies are employed as the research sample.Eleven key risks and 46 sub-risks are also ientified.Subsequently,the fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory technique is applied to determine the effective and affected risks and the severity of their effects on each other.Finally,all risks are ranked.Due to the interal interrelationships of the main risks,the weight of each risk is calculated via the fuzy analytic network process.As the second-level risks have no significant interrelationships,they are ranked via the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process.Moreover,the best-worst method is used to ensure that the obtained rankings are reliable.This study identifies the risks affecting the loss of banking projects and determines the impacts of these risks on each.A sensitivity analysis is then conducted on the weights of the criteria,and the results are compared. 展开更多

The systemic importance of a bank is usually measured by its effect on the banking system,conditional on the insolvency of the bank and solvency of other banks.However,banks encounter different kinds of shocks simultaneously in reality.So that,the conditional re-sults give biased estimates of banks'systemic importance when potential risks are ignored.Researchers like Tarashev et al.proposed the Shapley value method to deal with risk in-teractions,but it suffers heavy computational costs.This paper proposes an ANOVA-like decomposition method to measure the systemic importance of banks in more compli-cated and realistic environments,which considers both interactions and individual effects of multiple shocks and provides a more exact estimation of systemic importance.It is found that the method proposed in this paper fits well in the network models.And meanwhile,a discussion between the method proposed in this paper and the Shapley value method is made based on the numerical example,which aims to demonstrate it's the advantages.The Shapley value method requires 2n subsystems,while the ANOVA-like decomposition method requires only n+1 model runs.In the application part,the pro-posed method is adopted to measure the systemic importance of 16 Chinese listed banks.With low computational costs,the model outputs the individual effect,interaction,and total effect of each bank.The results confirm that interactions of different shocks play a significant role in the systemic importance of a bank;thus,the total effect considering interactions should be adopted. 展开更多

Expert scientific knowledge is fast becoming an integral part of disaster management, and, in the process, is changing the role of science for the reduction of disaster risks at the policy level. Yet science and policy operate in different domains between which there are often competing interests and modes of valuing knowledge. Based on research done as part of the research project Enhancing Synergies for Disaster Prevention in the European Union(ESPREssO), we discuss three major issues facing European Union member states with respect to the interface between science and policy for disaster risk reduction:knowledge transfer, disaster expertise, and risk awareness.In doing so, we hone in on three gaps: an epistemological gap, an institutional gap, and a strategic gap. We argue that these gaps can help explain underlying systematic challenges for the integration between science and policy for disaster risk reduction. These gaps need to be addressed by focusing on changes at the governance level. 展开更多

Background: Quantification of obesity/adiposity is feasible with different anthropometric characteristics along with the bioelectrical impedance analysis techniques. Recent advancements are now witnessing development of further computations derived from previously established measures to gauge obesity. Objective: Main aim of our study was to evaluate the association of anthropometric determinants of obesity with body compositional adiposity variables, and thus identifying the best marker among them emerging out as the probable predictor for compositional adiposity. Participants and Setting: 550 female participants within the age of 18 to 23 years were enrolled under this study attending graduation course at University of Delhi. Ethical clearance was received from the institutional head. Informed written consent was taken from every participant. Design: All the body measurements were recorded by trained staff using standard techniques. Derived measurements were calculated further. Analysis: Data, hence, gathered was undertaken for descriptive and infer-ential statistical analysis with SPSS 20.0. Variables Measured and Results: WHR over-estimated the count for those at risk compared to waist circumference and WHtR. Skeletal muscle fat associated negatively with all anthropometric adiposity indicators. BMI, BAI, WHtR and waist circumference related closely with all body composition cum obesity markers compared to WHR, CI and ABSI. BAI overrated the risk for fat determining body composition parameters the most followed by BMI. ABSI revealed an underestimated risk for augmenting fat content in body, compared to other markers. Conclusion and Implications: It is difficult to establish with compliance as to which of the measures used in the study could better predict the perils of obesity but it could be ascertained that some of the newly verified anthropometric adiposity indicators could be administered for determining clinical situations after further validation. 展开更多

Small and Medium Enterprises and Global Risks: Evidence from Manufacturing SMEs in Turkey 认领

This study investigated how small and medium enterprises(SMEs) in a country perceive major global risks. The aim was to explore how country attributes and circumstances affect SME assessments of the likelihood,impacts, and rankings of global risks, and to find out if SME risk assessment and rankings differ from the global rankings. Data were gathered using an online survey of manufacturing SMEs in Turkey. The results show that global economic risks and geopolitical risks are of major concern for SMEs, and environmental risks are at the bottom of their ranking. Among the economic risks, fiscal crises in key economies and high structural unemployment or underemployment were found to be the highest risks for the SMEs. Failure of regional or global governance, failure of national governance, and interstate conflict with regional consequences were found to be among the top geopolitical risks for the SMEs. The SMEs considered the risk of largescale cyber-attacks and massive incident of data fraud/theft to be relatively higher than other global technological risks.Profound social instability and failure of urban planning were among the top societal risks for the SMEs. Although the global environmental and disaster risks were ranked lowest on the list, man-made environmental damage and disasters and major natural hazard-induced disasters were ranked the highest among this group of risks. Overall, the results show that SMEs at a country level, for example Turkey, perceive global risks differently than the major global players. 展开更多

Trace metal contamination in soil is of great concern owing to its long persistence in the environment and toxicity to humans and other organisms.Concentrations of six potentially toxic trace metals,Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Cd,and Pb,in urban soils were measured in Dhaka City,Bangladesh.Soils from different land-use types,namely,agricultural field,park,playground,petrol station,metal workshop,brick field,burning sites,disposal sites of household waste,garment waste,electronic waste,and tannery wast,and construction waste demolishing sites,were investigated.The concentration ranges of Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Pb,and Cd in soils were 2.4–1258,8.3–1044,9.7–823,8.7–277,1.8–80,and 13–842 mg kg^-1,respectively.The concentrations of metals were subsequently used to establish hazard quotients(HQs)for the adult population.The metal HQs decreased in the order of As>Cr>Pb>Cd>Ni>Cu.Ingestion was the most vital exposure pathway of studied metals from soils followed by dermal contact and inhalation.The range of pollution load index(PLI)was 0.96–17,indicating severe contamination of soil by trace metals.Considering the comprehensive potential ecological risk(PER),soils from all land-use types showed considerable to very high ecological risks.The findings of this study revealed that in the urban area studied,soils of some land-use types were severely contaminated with trace metals.Thus,it is suggested that more attention should be paid to the potential health risks to the local inhabitants and ecological risk to the surrounding ecosystems. 展开更多

A growing focus is being placed on both individuals and communities to adapt to flooding as part of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030.Adaptation to flooding requires sufficient social capital(linkages between members of society),risk perceptions(understanding of risk),and self-efficacy(selfperceived ability to limit disaster impacts)to be effective.However,there is limited understanding of how social capital,risk perceptions,and self-efficacy interact.We seek to explore how social capital interacts with variables known to increase the likelihood of successful adaptation.To study these linkages we analyze survey data of 1010 respondents across two communities in Thua Tien-Hue Province in central Vietnam,using ordered probit models.We find positive correlations between social capital,risk perceptions,and self-efficacy overall.This is a partly contrary finding to what was found in previous studies linking these concepts in Europe,which may be a result from the difference in risk context.The absence of an overall negative exchange between these factors has positive implications for proactive flood risk adaptation. 展开更多

By using risk-adjusted price signals to transfer responsibility for property-level flood protection and recovery from governments to property owners,flood insurance represents a key tenet of the flood risk management(FRM)paradigm.The Government of Canada has worked with insurers to introduce flood insurance for the first time as a part of a broader shift towards FRM to limit the growing costs of flooding.The viability of flood insurance in Canada,however,has been questioned by research that disputes the utility of purchasing coverage by property owners.This study tested this assumption by drawing on public opinion survey data to assess factors that influence decisions about the utility of insurance.The findings reveal that Canadians have limited knowledge of flood insurance coverage,exhibit a low willingness-to-pay for both insurance and property-level flood protection measures,and expect governments to shoulder much of the financial burden of flood recovery through disaster assistance. 展开更多

Event evolution analysis which provides an effective approach to capture the main context of a story from explosive increased news texts has become the critical basis for many real applications,such as crisis and emergency management and decision making.Especially,the development of societal risk events which may cause some possible harm to society or individuals has been heavily concerned by both the government and the public.In order to capture the evolution and trends of societal risk events,this paper presents an improved algorithm based on the method of information maps.It contains an event-level cluster generation algorithm and an evaluation algorithm.The main work includes:1)Word embedding representation is adopted and event-level clusters are chosen as nodes of the events evolution chains which may comprehensively present the underlying structure of events.Meanwhile,clusters that consist of risk-labeled events enable to illustrate how events evolve along the time with transitions of risks.2)One real-world case,the event of"Chinese Red Cross",is studied and a series of experiments are conducted.3)An evaluation algorithm is proposed on the basis of indicators of map construction without massive human-annotated dataset.Our approach for event evolution analysis automatically generates a visual evolution of societal risk events,displaying a clear and structural picture of events development. 展开更多
