Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Low-Alloy, Medium-Carbon Steels After Multiple Tempering

The microstructure and mechanical properties of NiCrMoV-and NiCrSi-alloyed medium-carbon steels were investigated after multiple tempering. After austenitising, the steels were hardened by oil quenching and subsequently double or triple tempered at temperatures from 250 to 500 °C. The samples were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers hardness testing, V-notched Charpy impact testing and tensile testing. The results showed that the retained austenite was stable up to 400 °C and the applied multiple tempering below this temperature did not lead to a complete decomposition of retained austenite in both steels. It was also found that the microstructure, hardness and impact toughness varied mainly as a function of tempering temperature,regardless of the number of tempering stages. Moreover, the impact toughness of NiCrMoV steel was rather similar after single/triple tempering at different temperatures, while NiCrSi steel exhibited tempered martensite embrittlement after single/double tempering at 400 °C. The observed difference was mainly attributed to the effect of precipitation behaviour due to the effect of alloying additions in the studied steels. 展开更多

In order to control the ferrite and austenite percentage in duplex stainless steel welding, many researchers try to change the laser welding parameters and cooling medium, but ignore to study the influence of heat sink effect on weld strength. In this work, the effect of aluminium heat sink and varying cooling medium on the laser welding of duplex stainless steel (DSS) 2205 is studied. The 2 mm thick DSS sheets welded with pulsed Nd: YAG laser welding machine by varying the cooling medium (air and oil) and an aluminium plate used as a heat sink. The welded specimens tested for tensile strength, micro-hardness, distortion, microstructure and radiography analysis. The faster cooling rate in the oil quenching process enhances the ferrite percentage compared with air-cooled samples. But the faster cooling rate in oil quenching leads to more distortion and using aluminium as a heat sink influenced positively the distortion to a small extent. The lower cooling rate in air quenching leads to a higher tensile strength of the welded specimen. The objective of this work is to analyse experimentally the effect of cooling medium and heat sink in the mechanical and metallurgical properties of laser welded duplex stainless steel. 展开更多

Hot compression bonding was first used to join oxide-dispersion-strengthened ferrite steels(14 YWT)under temperatures of 750–1100℃ with a true strain range of 0.11–0.51. Subsequently, the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the joints were characterized, revealing that the 14 YWT steels could be successfully bonded at a temperature of at least 950℃ with a true strain of 0.22, without degrading the fine grain and nanoparticle distribution, and the presence of inclusions or micro-voids along the bonding interface. Moreover, the joints had nearly the same tensile properties at room temperature and exhibited a similar fracture morphology with sufficient dimples compared to that of the base material. An electron backscattered diffraction technique and transmission electron microscopy were systematically employed to study the evolution of hot deformed microstructures. The results showed that continuous dynamic recrystallization characterized by progressive subgrain rotation occurred in this alloy, but discontinuous dynamic recrystallization characterized by strain-induced grain boundary bulging and subsequent bridging sub-boundary rotation was the dominant nucleation mechanism. The nuclei will grow with ongoing deformation, which will contribute to the healing of the original bonding interface. 展开更多

To improve the heat transfer capability and the crystallization property of the traditional mold flux,CaF2 was replaced with B2O3.Then,the influences of CeO2 on the heat transfer and the crystallization of the CaF2-bearing mold flux and the new mold flux with 10wt% B2O3 were studied using a slag film heat flux simulator and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results revealed that the addition of CeO2 reduced the heat transfer by increasing the solid slag thickness and the crystallization of two mold fluxes.However,CeO2 had less effect on the B2O3-containing mold flux compared with the CaF2-bearing mold flux.According to the analyses,the CeO2 contents in the CaF2-bearing mold flux and the B2O3-containing mold flux should not exceed 8wt% and 12wt%,respectively.Therefore,these experimental results are beneficial to improve and develop the mold flux for casting rare earth alloy steels. 展开更多

Reliable dynamic mechanical properties of high nitrogen steels are necessary for the design and assessment of armor structures subject to impact and blast.A series of experiments,based on Hopkinson bar techniques,were conducted and described in this study.The dynamic compression,tensile and shear properties of high nitrogen steel had been tested,and the stress-strain curves under high strain rates were obtained.The results have been showed as follows:High nitrogen steel has a remarkable strain rate strengthening effect.Compared to the static curves,the constitutive curves of dynamic tension and compression move upper.The dynamic compressive yield strength of high nitrogen steel increases first and then decreases with the increase of strain rate,and the yield strength varies in the range of 1465 e1549MPa within the range of 1147e2042 s1 strain rate;The tensile strength of high nitrogen steel increases with the increase of strain rate.When the strain rate is greater than 1341 s1,the tensile strength will not increase and the curve tends to be gentle.The pure shear yield strength of the high nitrogen steel is above 800 MPa. 展开更多

In recent years,despite the global economic recession and steel oversupply,the demand for high strength steel (HSS)and advanced high strength steel(AHSS)sheets has robustly increased.To supply the materials needed for automotive manufacturing,various AHSS products and application technologies have been developed by Baosteel,including the lst,2nd,and 3rd Gen.AHSS,which makes Baosteel the world's first steel maker to commercially provide all three generations of AHSS.Recently,the new Gen.(the 2nd and 3rd Gen.combined) AHSS products,which feature ultra-high strength and enhanced ductility ,have drawn great attention from both steel makers and the automotive industry as these products can be used to produce auto parts with complicated shapes by cold forming and have great potential for manufacturing car bodies that are lighter in weight and have higher crash resistance.In this article,the concepts,properties,and applications of Baosteel's new Gen.AHSS products,including quenching and partitioning (QP)steels,twinning-induced-plasticity (TWIP)steels,and Medium-Mn (Mn-TRIP) steels,are described and reviewed.Moreover,the progress of the Baosteel light-weight steel car body (BCB)was reported. 展开更多

The localized and uniform corrosion resistances of bulk nanocrystalline 304 stainless steel(NC-304 SS)produced by severe rolling technique, and its conventional polycrystalline 304 stainless steel(CC-304 SS)counterpart, were investigated in high-concentration hydrochloric acid solutions at room temperature.NC-304 SS can scarcely suffer from localized corrosion in 4 mol/L and 5 mol/L HCl solutions during 5-day immersion tests, and in 1-3 mol/L HCl solutions during thirty-five-day immersion tests. The corrosion rate of NC-304 SS was also less than that of CC-304 SS during these immersion tests. The improved localized and uniform corrosion resistances of NC-304 SS were explained in terms of the adsorption and chemical activity of Cl~-on NC-304 SS and CC-304 SS characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and the valence electron configurations of NC-304 SS and CC-304 SS were characterized by ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy rather than conventional electrochemical results. 展开更多

Ferritic nitro-carburizing is one of the most popular surface hardening methods used to improve lifespan of hot work tool steels.Different types of mediums like gas,liquid,plasma and fluidized bed are generally used during ferritic nitro-carburizing process.In this paper,various ferritic nitro-carburizing methods were compared where gas,salt bath and fluidized are used as mediums.AISI H-13 hot work tool steel specimens were treated by using these different methods of nitro-carburizing and their performance was evaluated by using micro-structural and mechanical analysis.Optical microscopy,micro-hardness testing and X-ray stress analyzer were used for specimen characterization.Moreover,pin on disk dry sliding wear tests were performed to compare wear performance of specimens treated with different nitro-carburizing methods.It is perceived that,medium used during nitro-carburizing has significant influence on the final surface properties that can be achieved by ferritic nitro-carburizing. 展开更多

The effect of dissolved oxygen(DO)on the stress corrosion cracking(SCC)of 310S in supercritical water was investigated using slow-strain-rate tensile tests.The tensile properties,fracture morphology,and distribution of the chemical composition of the oxide were analyzed to evaluate the SCC susceptibility of 310S.The results showed that the rupture elongation decreased significantly as the degree of DO increased.A brittle fracture mode was observed on the fracture surface,and only intergranular cracking was observed on the surface of the gauge section,regardless of the DO.Cracks were widely distributed on the gauge surface near the fracture surface.Oxides were observed in the cracks with two-layered structures,i.e.,a Cr-rich inner oxide layer and an Fe-rich outer oxide layer. 展开更多

The effects of ausforming strain on bainite transformation in high-carbon low-alloy nanobainite steel were investigated using a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator machine. The bainite transformation speed at 300°C was found to be accelerated by ausforming at 300, 600, and 700°C under applied strains ranging from 10% to 50% followed by isothermal transformation at 300°C. The ausformed bainite volume fraction varied with the ausforming strain because of the mechanical stabilization of the deformed austenite. Ausforming at low temperatures not only enhanced the bainite ferrite volume fraction but also refined the microstructure substantially. Although the amount of bainite ferrite might have been reduced with increasing strain, the microstructures were refined by ausforming. 展开更多

微纳结构超高强度钢是兼具高强度、高塑性和高韧性的一类重要高性能钢铁结构材料。超细马氏体、贝氏体组织对于其强度起了决定性作用,对塑性和韧性起决定作用的为残留奥氏体。因此,如何通过调整化学成分和热处理工艺等手段调控残留奥... 微纳结构超高强度钢是兼具高强度、高塑性和高韧性的一类重要高性能钢铁结构材料。超细马氏体、贝氏体组织对于其强度起了决定性作用,对塑性和韧性起决定作用的为残留奥氏体。因此,如何通过调整化学成分和热处理工艺等手段调控残留奥氏体微结构,来实现精细组织结构和优良综合力学性能,成为新一代钢铁材料研究领域重要的课题。首先从钢铁材料强韧化机制出发,指出微观组织的精细化及硬相与软相的合理调控,是发展新一代钢铁材料的重要途径。然后针对近年来发展起来的超级贝氏体钢、Q&P钢、Q-P-T钢等具有微纳组织结构的超高强度钢,从合金设计、热处理工艺及组织结构与力学性能、磨损性能和疲劳性能的关系等方面进行综述与分析,最后指出微纳结构超高强度钢有待进一步深入研究与开发的问题。 展开更多
