In this paper,we report the experience received from the project-based learning activity in a fundamental chemistry course.We involved the first year students in Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi,Ratchaburi Learning Center,Thailand.This work considers the innovative activities performed in the field of chemistry and physics.This activity has been intensively implemented in teaching first year students.A project has been created to build up a small machine for measuring the concentration of sucrose solutions.The students participated in a project based learning(PBL)process,in which they worked in groups to create the instrument designed to measure the sucrose concentration in percentage by weight of sucrose in pure water solvent.Project-based learning has gained a greater position in the classroom as researchers have documented what teachers have long understood:Students become more engaged in learning when they have a chance to dig into complex and challenging problems that closely resemble real life.Moreover,several surveys have been conducted along one academic year to evaluate the impact of this method.The results of the surveys show that PBL encourages students’motivation and improves their knowledge involving the project.It is also pointed out that this methodology requires more dedication from lecturers than traditional methodology. 展开更多

Self-evident Automated Proving Based on Point Geometry from the Perspective of Wu’s Method Identity

The algebraic methods represented by Wu's method have made significant breakthroughs in the field of geometric theorem proving.Algebraic proofs usually involve large amounts of calcula- tions,thus making it difficult to understand intuitively.However,if the authors look at Wu's method from the perspective of identity,Wu's method can be understood easily and can be used to generate new geometric propositions.To make geometric reasoning simpler,more expressive,and richer in geometric meaning,the authors establish a geometric algebraic system (point geometry built on nearly 20 basic properties/formulas about operations on points)while maintaining the advantages of the coordinate method,vector method,and particle geometry method and avoiding their disadvantages.Geometric relations in the propositions and conclusions of a geometric problem are expressed as identical equations of vector polynomials according to point geometry.Thereafter,a proof method that maintains the essence of Wu's method is introduced to find the relationships between these equations.A test on more than 400 geometry statements shows that the proposed proof method,which is based on identical equations of vector polynomials,is simple and effective.Furthermore,when solving the original problem,this proof method can also help the authors recognize the relationship between the propositions of the problem and help the authors generate new geometric propositions. 展开更多

The effects of prosodic phrase(PP)boundary on the pitch lowering of downstep and focus,as well as the domains of them were investigated in Chinese Putonghua,by using designed sentences which consist of two prosodic phrases(i.e.,PP1,PP2).The results showed that:(1)The PP boundary blocked the downstep effect in the preceding phrase,indicating that PP is the domain of downstep.(2)The post-focus F0 lowering effect in PP1 spread across the PP boundary and lower the FO contour of PP2.If there is a downstep effect in PP2,the postboundary compression effect of the prior focus will accumulate with the downstep,producing further lowered contour.Therefore,the domain of focus is an intonational phrase(IP).(3)When there is one contrastive focus in each phrase,the outstanding pitch reset elicited by the second focus will block the FO lowering effect of PP1 onto PP2,and the two foci are realized independently. 展开更多

Inhibitory GABAergic interneurons are fundamental elements of cortical circuits and play critical roles in shaping network activity. Dysfunction of interneurons can lead to various brain disorders, including epilepsy,schizophrenia, and anxiety. Based on the electrophysiological properties, cell morphology, and molecular identity,interneurons could be classified into various subgroups. In this study, we investigated the density and laminar distribution of different interneuron types and the coexpression of molecular markers in epileptic human cortex.We found that parvalbumin(PV) and somatostatin(SST)neurons were distributed in all cortical layers except layer I, while tyrosine hydroxylase(TH) and neuropeptide Y(NPY) were abundant in the deep layers and white matter.Cholecystokinin(CCK) neurons showed a high density in layers IV and VI. Neurons with these markers constituted*7.2%(PV), 2.6%(SST), 0.5%(TH), 0.5%(NPY), and4.4%(CCK) of the gray-matter neuron population. Doubleand triple-labeling revealed that NPY neurons were also SST-immunoreactive(97.7%), and TH neurons were more likely to express SST(34.2%) than PV(14.6%). A subpopulation of CCK neurons(28.0%) also expressed PV, but none contained SST. Together, these results revealed the density and distribution patterns of different interneuron populations and the overlap between molecular markers in epileptic human cortex. 展开更多

Low-intensity focused ultrasound stimulation(FUS), which possesses high spatial resolution and penetration depth, has been developing rapidly for noninvasive brain neuromodulation in recent years. In this letter, a low-intensity FUS system was developed for noninvasive brain neuromodulation in vivo. The radius of ultrasonic focal spot was quantitatively calculated in theory to evaluate the spatial resolution. The local field potential(LFP) of rat hippocompus were recorded before and after FUS. The effect of FUS on LFP power spectrum was investigated by computing the LFP mean absolute power and relative power with Welch algorithm. The experiment results show that noninvasive FUS can enhance LFP mean absolute power and alter the LFP relative power at different frequency bands. The results indicate that FUS can modulate brain rhythms and has significant potential in the modulation of neuronal and psychiatric diseases. 展开更多

In order to investigate the collective behaviors in crowds, plenty of studies have been conducted on group detection.However, most of the existing methods are limited to discover the underlying semantic priors of individuals. By segmenting the crowd image into patches, this paper proposes the Patch-based Topic Model(PTM) for group detection. The main contributions of this study are threefold:(1) the crowd dynamics are represented by patchlevel descriptor, which provides a macroscopic-level representation;(2) the semantic topic label of each patch are inferred by integrating the Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA) model and the Markov Random Fields(MRF);(3) the optimal group number is determined automatically with an intro-class distance evaluation criterion.Experimental results on real-world crowd videos demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over the state-of-the-arts. 展开更多

In this study we examined the suitability of the 3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine ring system in developing novel anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents incorporating a diaryl pharmacophore. Eight 2,3-diaryl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives retrieved from our in-house database were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against nine cancer cell lines. The results indicated that the compounds showed moderate cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, MDA-MB-468, K562 and SaOS2 cells, with K562 being the most sensitive among the four cancer cell lines. The eight 2,3-diaryl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives were also evaluated for their COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory activity in vitro. The results showed that compound 3f exhibited 2-fold selectivity with IC50 values of 9.2 and 21.8 mmol/L against COX-2 and COX-1, respectively. Molecular docking studies on the most active compound 3f revealed a binding mode similar to that of celecoxib in the active site of the COX-2 enzyme. 展开更多

This has led to the partial substitution of live animals with artificial virtual stim-uli. In addition to standardization and reproducibility, virtual stimuli open new options for re-searchers since they are easily changeable in morphology and appearance, and their behavior canbe defined. In this article, a novel toolchain to conduct behavior experiments with fish is presentedby a case study in sailfin mollies Poecilia latipinna. As the toolchain holds many different and novelfeatures, it offers new possibilities for studies in behavioral animal research and promotes thestandardization of experiments. The presented method includes options to design, animate, andpresent virtual stimuli to live fish. The designing tool offers an easy and user-friendly way to definesize, coloration, and morphology of stimuli and moreover it is able to configure virtual stimuli ran-domly without any user influence. Furthermore, the toolchain brings a novel method to animatestimuli in a semiautomatic way with the help of a game controller. These created swimming pathscan be applied to different stimuli in real time. A presentation tool combines models and swim-ming paths regarding formerly defined playlists, and presents the stimuli onto 2 screens.Experiments with live sailfin mollies validated the usage of the created virtual 3D fish models inmate-choice experiments. 展开更多

Semantic segmentation has recently witnessed rapid progress, but existing methods only focus on identifyingobjects or instances. In this work, we aim to address the task of semantic understanding of scenes with deep learning.Different from many existing methods, our method focuses on putting forward some techniques to improve the existingalgorithms, rather than to propose a whole new framework. Objectness enhancement is the first effective technique. Itexploits the detection module to produce object region proposals with category probability, and these regions are used toweight the parsing feature map directly. "Extra background" category, as a specific category, is often attached to the categoryspace for improving parsing result in semantic and instance segmentation tasks. In scene parsing tasks, extra backgroundcategory is still beneficial to improve the model in training. However, some pixels may be assigned into this nonexistentcategory in inference. Black-hole filling technique is proposed to avoid the incorrect classification. For verifying these twotechniques, we integrate them into a parsing framework for generating parsing result. We call this unified framework asObjectness Enhancement Network (OENet). Compared with previous work, our proposed OENet system effectively improvesthe performance over the original model on SceneParsel50 scene parsing dataset, reaching 38.4 mIoU (mean intersection-over-union) and 77.9% accuracy in the validation set without assembling multiple models. We investigate transcranial magneto–acoustical stimulation(TMAS) for noninvasive brain neuromodulation in vivo.TMAS as a novel technique uses an ultrasound wave to induce an electric current in the brain tissue in the static magnetic field. It has the advantage of high spatial resolution and penetration depth. The mechanism of TMAS onto a neuron is analyzed by combining the TMAS principle and Hodgkin–Huxley neuron model. The anesthetized rats are stimulated by TMAS, resulting in the local field potentials which are recorded and analyzed. The simulation results show that TMAS can induce neuronal action potential. The experimental results indicate that TMAS can not only increase the amplitude of local field potentials but also enhance the effect of focused ultrasound stimulation on the neuromodulation. In summary, TMAS can accomplish brain neuromodulation, suggesting a potentially powerful noninvasive stimulation method to interfere with brain rhythms for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. 展开更多

We characterized a unique group of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder(NMOSD) who carried autoantibodies of aquaporin-4(AQP4) and myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG). Among the 125 NMOSD patients... We characterized a unique group of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder(NMOSD) who carried autoantibodies of aquaporin-4(AQP4) and myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG). Among the 125 NMOSD patients, 10(8.0%) were AQP4- and MOG-ab double positive, and 14(11.2%) were MOG-ab single positive. The double-positive patients had a multiphase disease course with a high annual relapse rate(P=0.0431), and severe residual disability(P<0.0001). Of the double-positive patients, 70% had MS-like brain lesions, more severe edematous, multifocal regions on spinal magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), pronounced decreases of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and atrophy of optic nerves. In contrast, patients with only MOG-ab had a higher ratio of monophasic disease course and mild residual disability. Spinal cord MRI illustrated multifocal cord lesions with mild edema, and brain MRIs showed more lesions around lateral ventricles. NMOSD patients carrying both autoantibodies to AQP4 and MOG existed and exhibited combined features of prototypic NMO and relapsing-remitting form of MS, whereas NMOSD with antibodies to MOG only exhibited an 'intermediate' phenotype between NMOSD and MS. Our study suggests that antibodies against MOG might be pathogenic in NMOSD patients and that determination of anti-MOG antibodies maybe instructive for management of NMOSD patients. 展开更多
